Biography

Short Description

Magnus of Cuneo, known in Italian as San Magno, is a Christian saint whose cult is concentrated in the Grana Valley of southwestern Piedmont, in what is now the province of Cuneo in northwestern Italy. The principal focus of his veneration is the alpine sanctuary that bears his name in the comune of Castelmagno, a high mountain church that has drawn pilgrims from the surrounding valleys for centuries. Virtually nothing about a historical Magnus can be recovered from sources anywhere near his supposed lifetime. Later local tradition identifies him as a soldier, sometimes a centurion, of the Theban Legion, the Egyptian Christian unit whose destruction at Agaunum in the Swiss Valais forms the core of the legend of Saint Maurice. That legend was already circulating by the fifth century, but it does not name a Magnus active in the Italian Alps.

According to the story told in the Cuneo region, Magnus escaped the massacre of his legion in the late third century, traditionally placed in the reign of Maximian, and made his way across the Alps into the Cottian range. There he is said to have preached Christianity among the people of the Valle Grana and to have been killed by pagans. Some retellings add a period of eremitical life in the high pastures before his death. These details belong to medieval and later hagiography rather than to demonstrable history. Historians have noted that the saint's feast falls on 19 August, the same day as that of Saint Magnus of Anagni, a Campanian martyr, and have suggested that an imported or generic cult of a Saint Magnus was localized in the Piedmontese mountains and then clothed in Theban Legion imagery, which was widely popular in the western Alps. No early passion, martyrology entry, or inscription independently attests a third-century martyr named Magnus at this site.

The sanctuary of San Magno at Castelmagno stands at a high altitude in the Cottian Alps. A church dedicated to the saint on that mountain is attested from the thirteenth century, and the building was enlarged in later medieval and early modern campaigns, becoming a regional pilgrimage church. An annual fair associated with the feast of 19 August long served the livestock trade of the surrounding high pastures. Devotion remains especially strong in Castelmagno, of which San Magno is the patron, and among the pastoral communities of the Grana Valley. Some modern summaries also style him a patron of Cuneo, though that city's principal patrons are customarily others, and the designation may reflect the provincial setting rather than municipal patronage.

No verified year of birth or death can be given, nor a documented native city or country. Traditional burial is associated with the site of the present sanctuary, but this too rests on legend rather than archaeological or early textual proof. Magnus of Cuneo was not a pope or a patriarch, is not known to have belonged to a religious order, and is not recorded as having a spouse or children. His cult is of the immemorial kind and was not created by a formal papal canonization of the later type. He is to be distinguished from other saints named Magnus, notably Magnus of Füssen, an eighth-century missionary in Bavaria, Magnus of Anagni, and Magnus of Milan. The historical obscurity of the Piedmontese Magnus is itself a central fact: what can be studied with confidence is the medieval and modern cult in the Valle Grana, not a reconstructable third-century biography.
