Biography

Short Description

Magnus of Füssen, also called Magnus of St. Gallen, Magnoald, or Saint Mang, was an eighth-century missionary monk honoured as the Apostle of the Allgäu in present-day southern Bavaria. No charter or annal from his own lifetime names him. The chief narrative source is the Vita S. Magni, composed at the Abbey of St. Gall in the late ninth or early tenth century and later revised. Historians regard the vita as largely legendary, written to connect the monastery at Füssen with St. Gall and with the Columbanian tradition. In that account Magnus is a companion of Saint Gall and, through Gall, of Saint Columbanus, which led many later writers to call him Irish. There is no independent proof of an Irish birth. A more cautious view, widely accepted in modern scholarship, is that he was a monk of St. Gall, of Alemannic or Frankish milieu, who preached in the Allgäu in the middle of the eighth century under the auspices of his abbey and of the bishops of Augsburg.

The vita states that after Gall’s death the community of St. Gall sent Magnus and a priest named Theodore to evangelize Alemannic districts that remained only partly Christian. They first built a cell at Eschach, near Kempten. Magnus then went on to Füssen, at the gorge of the river Lech where Alpine routes descend toward the north. There he founded a hermitage that became the Benedictine abbey of Saint Mang. Folklore and the vita attach to this mission a series of miracle stories common in early medieval hagiography: Magnus tames a bear that thereafter serves him as a beast of burden; he drives a dragon or giant serpent from a mountain cave; his staff takes root and grows into a tree. Bishop Wicterp of Augsburg is named as an episcopal supporter of the work. None of these episodes can be confirmed from contemporary evidence.

Tradition holds that Magnus died at Füssen and was buried at the cell he had established. Medieval sources give the date as 6 September and the year as either 750 or 772; both years are late and unverified. His tomb became a pilgrimage site. The Abbey of St. Mang grew up around it and, as a Benedictine monastery, played a central role in the religious and cultural life of the Allgäu throughout the Middle Ages. The former abbey church in Füssen, now a basilica, still preserves his relics and remains the heart of his cult. Veneration spread through Bavaria, Swabia, the Tyrol, and neighbouring parts of Switzerland and Austria. Local place names such as Sankt Mang in Kempten preserve his memory.

Magnus is commemorated on 6 September. He is patron of Füssen and of the Allgäu, and he has long been invoked against snakes, vermin, caterpillars, and hail, a combination of the dragon legend with the practical anxieties of an agricultural society. Because he lived centuries before the papacy reserved the right of canonization to itself, he is a saint of the so-called pre-congregation period. His cult arose from monastic and popular devotion rather than from a recorded papal act of beatification or canonization. The historical Magnus, stripped of later legend, is best understood as an eighth-century monk-missionary whose grave at Füssen became the nucleus of an important regional abbey and of a lasting local cult.
