Biography

Short Description

Magnus served as archbishop of Milan in the early sixth century, occupying the see according to the traditional Catalogus archiepiscoporum Mediolanensium from 518 until 530. His episcopate fell during the later years of Ostrogothic rule in Italy, first under King Theodoric the Great and then under Theodoric’s young successor Athalaric. Milan at that time was still one of the principal cities of the West and the centre of a metropolitan province that followed the Ambrosian liturgical tradition. The Gothic kings were Arians, while Magnus and his flock were Catholics; the sources give no indication of open conflict during his tenure, suggesting a period of pragmatic coexistence.

No information survives concerning Magnus’s birth, family, or life before his elevation to the episcopate. He first appears in the historical record in 519, when Pope Hormisdas, having ended the Acacian Schism with Constantinople, wrote to the bishops of Italy. Magnus was among the recipients of the papal letter that required subscription to a formula of orthodox faith. A few years later he is mentioned in correspondence of Ennodius, bishop of Pavia. These notices confirm his status as metropolitan but supply no personal details, sermons, or administrative acts.

Medieval catalogues and later liturgical texts describe Magnus as a bishop of notable charity and holiness, yet such statements cannot be corroborated by sixth-century evidence. He died in 530, presumably in Milan. From an early date the church of Milan commemorated him as a saint. His feast is celebrated on 5 November in both the Ambrosian Rite and the Roman Martyrology.

Veneration of Saint Magnus has remained largely local to Lombardy. He is the patron saint of the city of Legnano, whose basilica is dedicated to him. No other specific patronages of places, professions, or causes are securely attested. Magnus thus belongs to the series of poorly documented yet continuously honoured bishops who preserved the Catholic and Ambrosian identity of Milan through the political transformations of late antiquity.
