Biography

Short Description

Majolus of Cluny, also known as Maiolus or Mayeul, was a tenth-century Benedictine monk and the fourth abbot of the Abbey of Cluny in Burgundy. He was born in the early tenth century into a noble family of Provence; surviving sources do not agree on a precise birthplace, Avignon and Valensole both appearing in the tradition. He received an education in the liberal arts, including study at Lyon, and entered the secular clergy, becoming a canon and subsequently archdeacon of Mâcon. Although he was well placed for a career as a bishop, he turned toward the monastic life and entered Cluny, the Burgundian house whose reform, begun earlier in the century under Abbots Berno and Odo, stressed strict observance of the Rule of Saint Benedict, a rich liturgical round, and a large measure of independence from local bishops.

After Abbot Aymard of Cluny lost his sight, Majolus was appointed to assist him and in time succeeded as abbot, governing the community through much of the second half of the tenth century. Under his direction Cluny’s customs were consolidated and its network of dependent priories and affiliated houses grew. He was frequently called to reform other monasteries in Gaul and Italy according to Cluniac practice and to intervene in disputes involving churches and princes. He maintained close ties with the Ottonian imperial court, especially with Otto I, Otto II, and the empress Adelaide, and he also dealt with the rulers of Burgundy and West Francia. Near-contemporary accounts state that he was pressed to accept election as bishop of Rome and that he declined.

In 972, while traveling across the Alps, Majolus was captured by Saracen raiders based at Fraxinetum on the Provençal coast and was held until a substantial ransom was paid by the monks of Cluny and their supporters. The episode, well remembered in Cluniac tradition, belongs to the last phase of Muslim raids in the western Alps before the destruction of Fraxinetum. After his release he continued his journeys of visitation and counsel. He died on 11 May 994 at the Cluniac priory of Souvigny in the Bourbonnais, while on a journey connected with his office, and was buried there.

His tomb at Souvigny became a place of pilgrimage, and he was venerated as a saint; his feast is observed on 11 May. Later Cluniac biographers portrayed him as a model of humility, learning, and peacemaking who refused both episcopal sees and the papacy. He was succeeded as abbot by Odilo of Cluny. Historians treat Majolus’s long abbacy as a central stage in Cluny’s transformation from a single reformed monastery into the head of a far-reaching monastic congregation whose influence marked the religious life of Western Europe in the decades around the year 1000.
