Biography

Short Description

Majoricus was a child martyr commemorated in the Western martyrological tradition among the Catholic victims of the Arian Vandal persecution in North Africa in the late fifth century. The Vandals, a Germanic people who had seized the former Roman provinces of Africa, professed Arian Christianity. Under King Huneric (reigned 477–484) a systematic campaign was launched against Nicene Catholics, especially after a conference of bishops at Carthage in 484. Those who refused to accept Arian teaching faced exile, confiscation, torture, and death. The notices that preserve Majoricus’s name locate the events simply in Africa, within the Vandal kingdom whose core lay in the region of modern Tunisia and eastern Algeria.

According to the traditional account preserved in the Roman Martyrology, Majoricus was the young son of Dionysia, a woman of notable beauty and some social standing. Dionysia was arrested for her Catholic faith, severely scourged, and then suspended over a fire. Seeing his mother’s torments, the boy was overcome with terror and appeared ready to abandon the Catholic confession. Even in the midst of her own sufferings Dionysia exhorted him to remain steadfast. Encouraged by her words, Majoricus persevered and was put to death, sharing her martyrdom.

The same commemoration groups with them several other sufferers: Dativa, identified as Dionysia’s sister; Leontia, a virgin; Tertius; Aemilianus (Emilian), a physician; Boniface; and a few unnamed companions. All are said to have endured various torments rather than embrace Arianism. No precise city of arrest or execution is recorded, nor are any further personal details about Majoricus himself—birth year, birthplace, or family beyond his mother—preserved in surviving sources.

The group is entered in the Roman Martyrology on 6 December. Their cult belongs to the ancient, pre-congregational veneration of martyrs; no later papal canonization or beatification process is documented. The principal contemporary narrative of Huneric’s persecution as a whole is the History of the Vandal Persecution by Victor of Vita, a Catholic bishop and eyewitness, though the specific names of Dionysia and Majoricus appear more prominently in subsequent martyrological compilations than in that work. Because the historical record is so sparse, Majoricus remains an obscure figure even among the African martyrs of the Vandal period, remembered solely as a child who, despite initial fear, followed his mother’s example of fidelity unto death.
