Biography

Short Description

Maksymilian Binkiewicz was a Polish Roman Catholic diocesan priest of the Diocese of Częstochowa, later numbered among the Blessed 108 Martyrs of World War II. He was born in 1908 in the village of Żarnowiec in southern Poland, then under the partitions. After secondary schooling he entered seminary and was ordained to the priesthood in 1931 by Bishop Teodor Kubina, the first bishop of the recently erected Częstochowa see. In the interwar years he served in parish work and as a religion teacher and prefect, including at the gymnasium in Wieluń, where he was known for pastoral care of youth and ordinary priestly ministry rather than for published writings or high office.

Under German occupation after 1939 he remained at his post. Nazi policy in occupied Poland treated the Catholic clergy as a mainstay of Polish national and religious life and subjected them to restriction, surveillance, and mass arrest. In October 1941 the Gestapo arrested Binkiewicz in Wieluń together with other local priests. After imprisonment in transitional facilities he was deported to Dachau concentration camp in Bavaria, which the regime used as a principal camp for clergy from occupied Europe. There he was held as a political prisoner under the harsh regime imposed on priests, including forced labor, starvation rations, and physical abuse.

He died in Dachau in August 1942, still a young priest, from the effects of camp conditions. Like countless other prisoners, he has no known personal grave; remains of those who died at Dachau were disposed of according to camp practice. Contemporary and later testimony from the beatification process presents him as remaining faithful to prayer and to mutual support among fellow inmates despite exhaustion and illness. His death belongs to the larger wartime destruction of the Polish clergy, in which thousands of priests, religious, and seminarians perished in prisons and camps.

On 13 June 1999 Pope John Paul II beatified him in Warsaw as one of the 108 Polish martyrs of the Second World War, a group comprising bishops, priests, men and women religious, and laypeople killed in odium fidei. Their collective liturgical memorial is 12 June. Binkiewicz is honored as Blessed Maksymilian Binkiewicz, a diocesan priest of Częstochowa. Compared with better-known figures in the same group, surviving detail about his inner life and early years is relatively modest, but the outline of his ordination, teaching ministry, arrest for his priestly identity, and death at Dachau is firmly established in the historical documentation of the cause.
