Biography

Short Description

Saint Mamelta (also rendered Mamelchtha in Greek sources) is commemorated as a Christian martyr of Persia. The principal notices of her life are brief entries in the Roman Martyrology and in Eastern synaxaria rather than a full contemporary vita. These sources place her in the Sasanian Empire, conventionally in the fourth century, a period marked by severe persecution of Christians under Shapur II, although the martyrologies themselves do not name the reigning monarch or give a precise year of death.

According to the tradition, Mamelta had served as a priestess of the goddess Artemis, called Diana in the Latin martyrology. While still attached to the pagan temple, she received a vision of an angel who instructed her in the Christian faith and urged her conversion. She then sought out a Christian bishop, who baptized her. The Roman Martyrology summarizes the sequence as conversion from idolatry by an angel followed by baptism at the hands of a holy bishop. No independent document records the bishop’s name or the place of the baptism.

Once her change of religion became known, she was seized by pagans. The accounts state that she was stoned and afterwards drowned in a lake. No surviving source records the name of the city or the lake with certainty; the martyrology simply locates the martyrdom in Persia. Later compilers have sometimes associated her with regions such as Beth Garmai, but those identifications are not securely attested in the earliest calendars and should be treated with caution. Her body is not associated with a known shrine or burial place in later pilgrimage literature.

The Church has kept her memory on 17 October. She appears in the Roman Martyrology on that date and is likewise remembered in some Eastern calendars. She is not recorded as a member of any Christian religious order, nor as a pope or patriarch. No reliable source mentions a husband or children, and no traditional list of patronages has been attached to her name. Because the historical record consists almost entirely of liturgical notices rather than a contemporary passio, many particulars of her biography remain unknown, and later attempts to assign an exact year of death or a specific Persian city cannot be verified from independent evidence.
