Biography

Short Description

Saint Mamilian, known in Latin as Mamilianus, was a bishop of Palermo in Sicily in the fifth century. Virtually no contemporary records of his life survive; the account of his career rests on later hagiographical tradition and on the evidence of his cult in Sicily and Tuscany. He lived during the era of Vandal expansion in the western Mediterranean, when the Arian Vandal kingdom based in North Africa conducted raids and occupations that affected Sicily and brought pressure to bear on the Nicene Catholic hierarchy.

Tradition relates that Mamilian was imprisoned or otherwise persecuted by the Vandals and was compelled to leave his see. He is said to have gone into exile, traveling by way of Rome to the islands off the Tuscan coast. On Montecristo he lived as a hermit; local tradition still points to a cave associated with him. He subsequently resided on Isola del Giglio, where he died. A conventional date of 460 is often given for his death, but it is not confirmed by independent historical documentation.

He was buried on Giglio. In later centuries his relics were translated to Sovana in Tuscany and became an object of veneration there; some relics were eventually returned to Palermo. Mamilian is the patron saint of Isola del Giglio. He is commemorated on 15 September and is honored as a confessor-bishop who suffered exile for the Catholic faith rather than as a martyr killed in the act of persecution.

Modern historical scholarship regards the narrative of his wanderings as largely legendary, while accepting that an early cult of a Bishop Mamilian of Palermo existed and that this cult took root both in Sicily and among the communities of the Tuscan archipelago. The persistence of his feast and of place-names and churches dedicated to him attests to the durability of that local devotion even where the biographical details remain uncertain.
