Biography

Short Description

Manahen (also rendered Manaen or Manaën; Greek Μαναήν) is a New Testament figure named only once in the canonical scriptures. In the Acts of the Apostles (13:1) he appears among the prophets and teachers of the Christian community at Antioch in Syria, listed together with Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, and Saul of Tarsus. The same verse identifies him as the syntrophos of Herod the tetrarch, that is, of Herod Antipas, son of Herod the Great and ruler of Galilee and Perea from 4 BC until his exile in AD 39. The Greek term syntrophos, given in the Latin tradition as collactaneus, may denote a foster-brother, a companion reared in the same household, or one who shared a wet-nurse; in any case it places Manahen in the intimate circle of the Herodian court during his youth. No ancient source records his parentage, a precise place of birth, or the year of his birth or death.

Nothing further is known of the circumstances that brought him from the tetrarch’s entourage into the church. Herod Antipas had himself been educated in part at Rome, and the Herodian household was a cosmopolitan environment in which Jewish, Idumean, and Greco-Roman influences mixed. That a member of this milieu became a Christian teacher at Antioch is historically plausible: Antioch, capital of the Roman province of Syria, was one of the earliest and most important centres of the Gentile mission, and it was there, according to Acts 11:26, that the disciples were first called Christians. The prophets and teachers named in Acts 13:1–3 were the leaders who, after prayer and fasting, laid hands on Barnabas and Saul and sent them out on what later tradition calls the first missionary journey. Manahen thus stands at a pivotal moment in the expansion of the church beyond Judea, though the biblical text assigns him no further spoken words or independent deeds.

Later ecclesiastical tradition, especially in the Christian East, numbered Manahen among the Seventy Apostles or Disciples whom Jesus is said to have sent out in pairs (Luke 10:1). Such catalogues, preserved in works attributed to Dorotheus of Tyre and in various synaxaria, are late and historically uncertain; they reflect the desire of later centuries to give names and stories to otherwise obscure New Testament figures. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 24 May, associating his memory with Antioch and describing him as a doctor and prophet of the New Testament. Eastern calendars remember him with the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles on 4 January. No reliable ancient source records the date or place of his death, nor any martyrdom; the martyrological notice at Antioch is liturgical rather than documentary.

Beyond these sparse notices, the historical Manahen remains obscure. No extra-biblical writer of the first or second century mentions him by name. Josephus, who treats the Herodian family in detail, does not record a court companion of this name who became a Christian (a different Manaen, an Essene who prophesied to Herod the Great, belongs to an earlier generation and should not be conflated with the Antiochene teacher). The silence of the sources after Acts 13:1 means that claims about his later ministry, travels, or death cannot be verified. He is venerated as a saint in both Western and Eastern Christianity, but he is not known to have been the subject of a formal papal canonization, nor is he associated with a religious order, a documented marriage, or specific patronages. His significance in Christian memory rests on the single, striking juxtaposition in Acts: a man raised with a Herodian prince who became a prophet of the church that would soon send missionaries into the wider Greco-Roman world.
