Biography

Short Description

Manés de Guzmán, whose name also appears as Mannes, Mames, and Mamés, was a Castilian priest of the Order of Preachers and the elder brother of Saint Dominic of Caleruega, founder of that order. He was born in Caleruega, in the Kingdom of Castile, during the second half of the twelfth century. His parents were Félix de Guzmán and Juana de Aza; the latter is venerated as blessed in the Catholic Church. The family belonged to the lesser nobility of Old Castile and held property at Caleruega, in the region then associated with the diocese of Osma. Besides Dominic, the brothers included at least one other son, frequently named Antonio in later tradition, who also entered the clerical life. Almost nothing that meets a strict documentary standard is known of Manés’s childhood, schooling, or the date of his ordination. Later Dominican hagiography portrays the household as pious, but the earliest narrative sources concentrate on Dominic rather than on his siblings, and precise years of birth for Manés are not preserved.

Manés was already a priest when the preaching community that became the Order of Preachers took shape in Languedoc. After Dominic obtained papal confirmation of the order in 1216, Manés received the Dominican habit and is counted among the early friars. Jordan of Saxony, Dominic’s successor as master of the order and author of the principal near-contemporary account of the foundation, mentions Mannes and characterizes him as a man of marked gentleness, simplicity, and personal holiness. In 1217 Dominic dispersed the Toulouse community in order to plant the order in the schools and in Spain. Manés was sent with a party of friars to Paris, then the chief theological center of Latin Christendom. He did not remain there permanently. He was subsequently assigned to the Iberian kingdoms, where the order was establishing its first houses in Castile and neighboring territories.

In Spain he was given responsibility in connection with the Dominican nuns of Madrid, the community that developed into the monastery of Santo Domingo el Real. Dominican tradition, consistent with Jordan’s portrait of his temperament, holds that he was chosen for this charge because of his mildness and compassion, qualities judged fitting for the spiritual care of a female community. The Madrid house belongs to the first generation of Dominican nuns in the peninsula, and Manés’s work there is one of the few concrete ministries that can be associated with him with any confidence. In later life he is linked again with Caleruega, which after Dominic’s death in 1221 became a focus of family memory and of the founder’s cult. The precise sequence of his assignments after the Madrid years remains obscure, as do any writings or administrative offices he may have held within the order.

The date and place of his death are not fixed by a contemporary obituary that has survived in the public record. Later authors place his death in the 1230s and name either Caleruega or the nearby Cistercian monastery of San Pedro de Gumiel; his relics were thereafter kept and venerated at Caleruega. He held no episcopal see and was neither pope nor patriarch. There is no historical evidence that he married or had children; the documented shape of his adult life is that of a diocesan priest who became a mendicant friar bound to celibacy. Popular patronages attached to his name are not securely listed in the standard hagiographical reference works.

Veneration of Manés remained largely confined to the Order of Preachers and to Castile until the nineteenth century. In 1834 Pope Gregory XVI confirmed his cult, the act that constitutes his beatification in the modern canonical sense. He was not subsequently canonized as a saint of the universal calendar. In the liturgical calendar of the Order of Preachers his memorial is observed on 18 August. The relative poverty of contemporary documentation means that many details of his biography—exact years of birth and death, the full sequence of his assignments, and any writings—cannot be verified and should not be supplied by conjecture.
