Biography

Short Description

Manikkavasagar (also spelled Māṇikkavācakar or Manikkavacakar), whose name is traditionally explained as meaning one whose utterances are like rubies, was a Tamil Shaiva poet-saint of the Pandya country in southern India. Modern scholarship generally places him in the ninth century CE, later than the Tevaram hymnists Appar, Campantar, and Cuntarar, but no contemporary inscription records an exact year of birth or death, and those dates remain unknown. Hagiographical tradition identifies his birthplace as Tiruvadavur (Thiruvadavur) near Madurai, on the Vaigai river, and gives his original name as Vadavurar. He is said to have come from a Brahmin family and to have risen to high ministerial office under a Pandya king of Madurai, a ruler whom later sources name in varying ways, including Arimarttana Pandya or a king of the Varaguna line.

According to the standard Shaiva legend, the king sent him with a large treasure to buy horses for the royal stables. On the journey he met a guru at Tirupperunturai (Avudaiyarkoil), understood in the tradition to be Shiva appearing as a Brahmin teacher. Overwhelmed by the instruction, Manikkavasagar spent the funds on restoring the Shiva temple there and embraced a life of devotion. When the king demanded an accounting, the story continues with miracles—jackals transformed into horses that later reverted—through which the saint was vindicated. Thereafter he lived as a wandering Shaiva devotee and hymn-singer rather than as a court official. These episodes belong to later hagiography (elaborated in works connected with the Tiruvilaiyadal tradition and related Shaiva puranas) and cannot be confirmed from independent ninth-century records, but they have shaped his cult for centuries.

His surviving works are the Tiruvacakam (Tiruvasagam), a collection of intensely personal hymns of longing, repentance, and surrender to Shiva, and the Tirukkovaiyar, a poem in the classical kovai genre. Together they form the eighth book of the Tirumurai, the Tamil Shaiva canonical corpus. The Tiruvacakam in particular acquired exceptional prestige in Tamil Shaiva culture; a traditional saying holds that one who is not moved by it will not be moved by any sacred speech. Although Manikkavasagar is not numbered among the sixty-three Nayanars of Sekkizhar’s twelfth-century Periya Puranam, he is counted with Appar, Campantar, and Cuntarar as one of the four great Tamil Shaiva teachers (the Nalvar) and is central to later Shaiva Siddhanta devotion and temple liturgy.

Later tradition holds that he spent his final period at Chidambaram, the temple of Nataraja, and that he was absorbed into the deity there, so that no ordinary tomb is associated with him. His hymns continued to be sung in Shaiva temples, and his life was retold in medieval Tamil religious literature. Historically, the ninth-century dating rests on relative literary chronology rather than on a dated inscription that names him, and many narrative details remain hagiographical. What is secure is his standing as one of the foremost voices of Tamil bhakti and the lasting liturgical and literary importance of the Tiruvacakam in South Indian Shaivism.
