Biography

Short Description

Manuel González García was born on 25 February 1877 in Seville, Spain, to a modest family; his father, Martín González Lara, worked as a carpenter, and his mother was Antonia García. He studied for the priesthood in the seminary of Seville and was ordained a priest on 21 September 1901 by Cardinal Marcelo Spínola y Maestre, Archbishop of Seville. He began his ministry as a diocesan priest in the Archdiocese of Seville. In 1902, while visiting the parish church of Palomares del Río near Seville, he found the tabernacle neglected and covered in dust. That encounter became the decisive spiritual turning point of his life and earned him the later popular title of Apostle of the Abandoned Tabernacles.

As a priest he served notably in Huelva, where he combined parish work with social concern for the poor and a growing campaign of Eucharistic reparation. In 1910 he founded the Work of the Three Marys (Marías de los Sagrarios) to encourage prayerful watch before the Blessed Sacrament. He later founded the Eucharistic Missionaries of Nazareth, as well as the Disciples of Saint John and the Children of Reparation, so that religious and lay people might live a life centered on the Eucharist and on reparation for abandoned tabernacles. He remained a diocesan cleric rather than a member of an older religious order, though these foundations carried his spirituality forward.

In 1915 he was named auxiliary bishop of Málaga and was consecrated in 1916; he became Bishop of Málaga in 1920. His years there were marked by pastoral visitation, catechesis, and promotion of Eucharistic devotion, against a background of rising anticlerical tension in early twentieth-century Spain. In 1935 he was transferred to the Diocese of Palencia. The Spanish Civil War that followed brought widespread destruction of churches and the killing of clergy in many regions, including his former see of Málaga. From Palencia he continued to insist that the Eucharist must not be left abandoned and that the life of priests and faithful should be organized around the tabernacle.

He died in Madrid on 4 January 1940 after illness had taken him there for care. He was buried in the Cathedral of Palencia, in the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, in keeping with his lifelong Eucharistic focus. Pope John Paul II beatified him on 29 April 2001. Pope Francis canonized him on 16 October 2016 in Saint Peter’s Square. The Catholic Church keeps his feast on 4 January and remembers him as a bishop whose teaching and foundations were devoted to love of the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist and to reparation for neglected tabernacles.
