Biography

Short Description

Manuel Torró García was a Spanish Catholic layman of the early twentieth century, remembered among the martyrs associated with the Archdiocese of Valencia. He was born in 1906 in Alzira (also known in older Spanish usage as Alcira), a town in the Ribera Alta of the province of Valencia in eastern Spain. Surviving diocesan and martyrological notices describe him as a young man employed in commerce, typically as a shop assistant or trade employee, who took part in parish life and in Catholic Action. In Spain in those decades Catholic Action gathered laypeople for catechesis, charity, and public Christian witness; membership often identified a person as a committed Catholic both to the Church and to its opponents. Little is recorded in widely available sources about his parents, schooling, or private household, and the brief vitae prepared later for a beatification process concentrate on his lay apostolate rather than on family detail.

The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in July 1936 brought a severe anticlerical persecution in Republican-controlled eastern Spain. In the province of Valencia, churches were closed or sacked, religious communities were dispersed, and clergy, religious, and known lay Catholics were arrested. Torró García was seized in that climate because of his faith and his association with Catholic organizations. He was taken to Paterna, a locality just northwest of the city of Valencia that became a principal site of executions during the first months of the war. There, in September 1936, he was put to death. Ecclesiastical accounts present the killing as motivated by hatred of the Catholic faith, the criterion later used in the beatification process. He was about thirty years old.

After the war, local churches gathered testimonies concerning the many who had died. Torró García’s cause was joined to that of a large group of priests, religious, and lay faithful from Valencia and neighboring territories. On 11 March 2001, in Saint Peter's Square, Pope John Paul II beatified 233 Spanish martyrs of the Civil War period, a group often called the Martyrs of Valencia or José Aparicio Sanz and 232 companions. Manuel Torró García was included among the lay members of that group. He has not been canonized. The Church keeps a liturgical commemoration of the group on 22 September.

Outside specialist martyrologies and diocesan lists he remains an obscure figure. Widely circulated sources do not document a spouse or children, nor do they assign him a religious order; he is remembered as a lay witness. His story is typical of the Valencia lay martyrs: an ordinary working Catholic whose public practice of the faith, rather than clerical office, led to a violent death in the persecution of 1936. Later notices preserve his name, origin in Alzira, and death at Paterna, but they do not expand into a full private biography.
