Biography

Short Description

Manvieu de Bayeux, also known as Saint Manvieu, Saint Manvé, or Manveus, was a bishop of the diocese of Bayeux in the Bessin, in what is now Normandy. He is customarily placed in the fifth century, in the late Roman or early Frankish period of northern Gaul, but no contemporary document records his birth, consecration, or death. He is known from later episcopal catalogues of Bayeux and from local liturgical memory rather than from letters, conciliar subscriptions, or narrative sources of his own age. Because of that silence, almost nothing can be established about his family, formation, or the circumstances in which he became bishop.

Traditional lists of the bishops of Bayeux set Manvieu among the early occupants of the see, after names such as Exuperius, Regnobert, and Lupus, and before sixth-century figures such as Vigor. Those catalogues were assembled long after the events they claim to describe and mix historical recollection with pious reconstruction. No authentic acta, charters, or chronicles from the fifth century mention him by name. Medieval writers attached to the church of Bayeux remembered him as a holy pastor of the Bessin, yet they did not transmit a detailed vita comparable to those of better-documented Gallic saints. Claims of a death around 480 that appear in some later compilations are traditional approximations, not dates fixed by contemporary evidence.

His cult remained local. The feast of Saint Manvieu has been observed on 28 May in calendars associated with the diocese of Bayeux. Several Norman localities, including Saint-Manvieu-Norrey and Saint-Manvieu-Bocage in Calvados, take their names from him, which shows that medieval devotion to this bishop had a territorial expression in the Bessin. Like many early medieval bishops of Gaul, he was honored as a saint through diocesan and popular recognition rather than through a formal papal canonization. No reliable source identifies a burial place, a religious order, a spouse, or children, and nothing indicates that he held the see of Rome or any patriarchal office.

Modern historical work treats the early episcopal sequence of Bayeux with caution. The church of Bayeux is poorly documented before the sixth and seventh centuries, and the order and dates of its first bishops cannot be verified independently. What can be said with restraint is that a bishop of this name was remembered as a predecessor in the see, that he was venerated as a saint in the local church, and that his cult left traces in place-names and in the diocesan liturgy. Beyond that, the facts of his birth, death, pastoral activity, and burial remain unknown.
