Biography

Short Description

Mappalicus was a Christian of Carthage who was put to death during the persecution under the emperor Decius in the mid-third century. Almost nothing can be verified about his earlier life: no reliable source records his parentage, occupation, place of birth, or whether he was married or had children. He enters the historical record solely through the contemporary Latin letters of Cyprian, bishop of Carthage, written while Cyprian himself was in concealment outside the city. In 250 Decius required the inhabitants of the empire to sacrifice to the traditional gods and to obtain a certificate of compliance. Refusal exposed Christians to imprisonment, judicial torture, and execution. Carthage, the principal see of Latin-speaking Africa, produced both a large number of those who yielded and a smaller number who persisted; Mappalicus belonged to the latter group.

Cyprian’s letter to the martyrs and confessors preserves the only detailed notice of Mappalicus’s end. While under torture Mappalicus told the presiding proconsul that the official would see a contest on the following day. Cyprian states that the prediction was fulfilled: the next day Mappalicus was led out and, in the presence of the people, received the crown of martyrdom. The account is brief and lacks the later legendary elaborations common in passiones; it is valuable precisely because it is a near-contemporary report from the bishop of the same church. The public character of the execution, emphasized by Cyprian, was intended by the authorities as a deterrent and was received by the Christian community as a strengthening witness.

Mappalicus is commemorated together with unnamed companions. The Roman Martyrology, drawing on the African tradition, lists them on 17 April as martyrs of Carthage. Cyprian’s correspondence from the same months names other Carthaginian confessors who died under torture, in prison, or after prolonged detention, but the sources do not preserve a complete, independently verified list of those who died with Mappalicus on that particular day. After Decius died in 251 the African church was occupied with the reconciliation of the lapsed. The memory of uncompromising martyrs such as Mappalicus formed part of the moral background to the councils held at Carthage and to Cyprian’s treatises on the lapsed and on the unity of the church.

No burial site, later translation of relics, or medieval legendary life can be verified. As an early martyr he was venerated by acclamation rather than by any subsequent papal canonization or beatification process. No historically grounded patronages of places, professions, or causes are attached to his name in the surviving liturgical and hagiographical record. His cult remains that of a local Carthaginian witness of the Decian persecution, known almost entirely through Cyprian and the martyrological entry that depends on him.
