Biography

Short Description

Marcantonio Cavanis was born in Venice in 1774, in the last generation of the independent Venetian Republic. Together with his elder brother Antonio he grew up in a pious household of sufficient means to provide an education at a time when many children in the city received none. The sudden end of the Serenissima in 1797, French occupation, the suppression of traditional religious houses and confraternities, and the later assignment of Venetia to Habsburg rule dismantled much of the old charitable fabric of the city. In that climate of institutional and social disruption the two brothers embraced the priesthood and a particular mission to poor and abandoned boys.

Once ordained as priests of the Latin Patriarchate of Venice, Marcantonio and Antonio began gathering destitute youths for catechesis and elementary instruction. Early in the nineteenth century they founded free schools that became known as the Schools of Charity. The work included not only classroom teaching but lodging, moral formation, and preparation for honest work. Collaborators joined them, and the enterprise took on the character of a religious community, eventually recognized as the Congregation of the Schools of Charity, commonly called the Cavanis Fathers. Marcantonio shared the government of the institute with his brother, combining the duties of a priest with those of a teacher and administrator. Congregational tradition generally describes him as more interior and reserved than Antonio, yet equally steadfast in the daily labor of the schools.

The community survived Napoleonic hostility to religious institutes, the Restoration, and the political agitation of the mid-nineteenth century by remaining focused on education rather than on public controversy. Both brothers spent virtually their entire lives in Venice. Antonio died there in June 1853; Marcantonio died in the same city in November of that year. They left behind a small but durable congregation devoted to the Christian education of the poor.

A cause of beatification for the Cavanis brothers was later introduced. They have not been beatified or canonized. In congregational and local Venetian Catholic memory they are often styled Venerable, a title associated with recognition of heroic virtue, though they have not been raised to the honors of the altar. Their principal legacy is the continuing educational work of the Cavanis Institute and the example of two priests who, in a time of political collapse, chose the unspectacular service of neglected children.
