Biography

Short Description

Marcelina Darowska was born Marcelina Kotowicz on 16 January 1827 in the village of Szulaki, in a Polish gentry family living in the Podolian borderlands of the Russian Empire. She grew up in a devout Catholic household and received a solid education at home and, for a time, in Odessa. Although she felt an attraction to consecrated life in her youth, she followed the wishes of her family and in 1849 married Karol Darowski. The couple had two children. Their life together lasted only a few years: Karol Darowski died of typhus in 1852, and their young son died soon afterward. Darowska was left a widow with a daughter, an experience of loss that deepened her religious convictions.

In the years that followed she settled her family affairs and, in the mid-1850s, traveled to Rome. There she met Józefa Karska and priests of the Congregation of the Resurrection, who were then gathering a community of women dedicated to the Christian formation of girls. In 1857 Darowska and Karska co-founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. After Karska’s death in 1860, Darowska became superior of the still-small institute and remained its superior general for the rest of her life. She gave the congregation its lasting character: a blend of contemplative devotion to the mystery of the Immaculate Conception with an active apostolate of education.

In 1863 she established the principal house of the congregation at Jazłowiec in Austrian Galicia, opening a convent and a boarding school for girls. Jazłowiec became the spiritual and educational center of the sisters, commonly called the Niepokalanki in Polish. Darowska’s educational program sought to form women of character who could serve as wives, mothers, and civic influences in a Polish society living under foreign partitions. The congregation opened further convents and schools in the Polish lands during the later nineteenth century, combining religious instruction with a broad curriculum. Darowska governed with a reputation for practical sense, insistence on thorough formation of the sisters, and attention to the social role of educated Catholic women.

She died at Jazłowiec on 5 January 1911. The congregation continued after her death; in the mid-twentieth century, when Jazłowiec passed under Soviet rule, the sisters were expelled and eventually made Szymanów in Poland their motherhouse. Pope John Paul II beatified Marcelina Darowska on 6 October 1996 in Saint Peter’s Square. The Catholic Church keeps her feast on 5 January. She has not been canonized. Her historical importance lies in the founding and long direction of a teaching congregation that shaped several generations of Polish women in the partitioned and later independent Polish lands.
