Biography

Short Description

Marcellinus of Carthage, commonly identified in contemporary sources as Flavius Marcellinus, was a high-ranking Roman imperial official and Christian martyr of the early fifth century. He held the office of tribunus et notarius and the senatorial rank of vir clarissimus in the service of the Western emperor Honorius. The date and place of his birth are not recorded. He is known principally from his activity in North Africa between about 410 and 413 and from the writings of his friend Augustine of Hippo. Augustine dedicated to him the treatises On the Merits and Forgiveness of Sins and on Infant Baptism and On the Spirit and the Letter, and began The City of God at Marcellinus's request after the Visigothic sack of Rome in 410, in order to answer pagan claims that Christianity had caused the disaster.

In 411 Honorius named Marcellinus the imperial commissioner to preside at a conference of bishops held at Carthage to resolve the Donatist controversy that had divided the African church for a century. Large delegations of Catholic and Donatist bishops attended. After hearing the arguments over several sessions, Marcellinus ruled in favor of the Catholics, a judgment consistent with existing imperial legislation against the schism. Donatist leaders denounced him as biased because he was himself a Catholic. Augustine and other Catholic writers insisted on his fairness and personal integrity. The conference nevertheless left a residue of bitterness that later contributed to his downfall.

In 413 the comes Africae Heraclianus rebelled against Honorius and was defeated. Count Marinus arrived in Africa to suppress remaining opposition. Marcellinus and his brother Apringius, who was proconsul of Africa, were accused of supporting the revolt, imprisoned, and condemned. Augustine interceded for them, and an imperial pardon appears to have been forthcoming, yet Marinus proceeded with the executions. Marcellinus was beheaded at Carthage in September 413. Catholic tradition soon honored him as a martyr, attributing his death in part to Donatist enmity against a magistrate who had upheld the Catholic cause, even though the formal charge was political.

His cult is ancient. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 13 September as a martyr beheaded at Carthage for the Catholic faith. Augustine mourned him in surviving correspondence, notably Letter 151, and continued to speak of his virtue. Jerome and the historian Orosius also mention him with honor. Nothing certain is known of a wife or children, of his burial place, or of any later papal act of canonization; like other martyrs of late antiquity he was venerated by popular acclaim rather than by the later formal processes of beatification and canonization. He remains a well-documented example of a Christian lay official caught between imperial politics and ecclesiastical conflict in Roman North Africa.
