Biography

Short Description

Marcianus of Constantinople, known in Latin sources as Marcianus and in Greek as Markianos, flourished in the fifth century in the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. Surviving hagiographical notices, which draw on fifth- and sixth-century traditions, state that he was born in Constantinople itself into a family of high social rank, described as senatorial and of Roman stock. The exact year of his birth is not recorded in any reliable source. He received the education customary for a member of the urban aristocracy and was noted from an early period for personal austerity and for the generous use of his inherited wealth on behalf of the poor.

In the middle decades of the fifth century he was ordained priest and was subsequently appointed oikonomos of the Great Church, the principal administrator of the estates and revenues of Hagia Sophia and of the patriarchal see. This office placed him at the centre of Constantinopolitan ecclesiastical life during the patriarchate of Gennadius I. Marcianus employed both the resources of his office and his private fortune for the relief of the needy, the ransoming of captives, and the building and restoration of churches. He is particularly associated with the restoration of the church of Saint Anastasia, which had fallen into disrepair, and with the erection of a church in honour of Saint Irene. Later tradition also credits him with the construction or embellishment of other oratories in the city.

The period of his activity coincided with the aftermath of the Council of Chalcedon and with continuing disputes over the person of Christ. Hagiographers present Marcianus as a firm supporter of Chalcedonian doctrine and an opponent of both Nestorian and Eutychian teachings. His own manner of life was sufficiently rigorous that some contemporaries accused him of Novatianism. Patriarch Gennadius is said to have examined the charge and to have pronounced Marcianus orthodox. Accounts of his life also attribute to him several miracles, the most frequently mentioned being the extinguishing of a conflagration in Constantinople by means of prayer.

Marcianus died in Constantinople. Traditional dates for his death vary between 471 and 477; neither figure can be regarded as securely established. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 10 January, as does the Byzantine synaxarion. He was buried in the capital, although the precise site of his tomb is not identified with certainty in the extant sources. Veneration of Marcianus as a saint is attested in both Eastern and Western calendars from an early date; he belongs to the large number of holy priests and confessors whose cult developed by popular acclaim rather than by a formal process of canonization. No specific patronages are securely attached to his name in the medieval or modern tradition.
