Biography

Short Description

Marcin Oprządek was born Józef Oprządek on 4 April 1884 in Koźmin Wielkopolski in Greater Poland, a region then under Prussian administration as part of the German Empire. Raised in a Polish Catholic family during the era of the partitions, he entered the Order of Friars Minor in the early twentieth century and received the religious name Marcin. He professed vows as a lay brother, committing himself to a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience in the Franciscan tradition.

As a brother in the Polish Franciscan province, he carried out the practical work of the community in various monasteries during the years of the Second Polish Republic. His vocation was one of humble service, supporting the liturgical and pastoral activities of the friars through labor and a life of prayer. Little is recorded of his individual personality beyond the witness of a faithful religious life lived in obscurity.

After the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, the Catholic Church and religious orders became targets of Nazi persecution. Friar Marcin was arrested by the occupying authorities and eventually deported to the Dachau concentration camp in Bavaria. Dachau held a large number of Polish priests and religious who were subjected to particularly harsh treatment, including starvation rations, exhausting labor, and brutality.

Marcin Oprządek died in Dachau on 18 May 1942 as a consequence of the camp's conditions. The Church recognizes him as a martyr who gave his life for the faith. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 13 June 1999 in Warsaw as one of the 108 Martyrs of World War II. The group is liturgically commemorated on 12 June. His life and death testify to the endurance of religious consecration under totalitarian oppression.
