Biography

Short Description

Marco da Montegallo was born in 1425 at Montegallo, a hill town in the Marche of central Italy, in the diocese of Ascoli Piceno, then part of the Papal States. Later tradition identifies him with the local noble Melatini family. He received the education of a well-born layman of the fifteenth century, studying law and medicine, and is described in the biographical tradition as having practiced as a physician. Franciscan and later Catholic accounts state that he married and that, after a period of married life, he and his wife agreed to enter religion: he joined the Observant branch of the Order of Friars Minor, and she is said to have entered the Poor Clares. The wife's name is not securely established in the sources commonly cited, and the marriage itself is known chiefly through hagiographical tradition rather than through a dense archival record.

As an Observant Franciscan he became a preacher in the second half of the fifteenth century, working in the Marche and elsewhere on the Italian peninsula, including the Veneto. The Observants of that era combined popular preaching and campaigns for moral reform with a stricter reading of the Franciscan rule than that associated with the Conventual wing of the order, and they were especially active against usury. Marco belonged to this reforming current. His most lasting historical association is with the monti di pietà, charitable pawn institutions meant to offer the poor an alternative to high-interest lending. He is linked with the promotion or foundation of such houses in several cities, among them Fano, Recanati, Fermo, Ascoli, and Vicenza, in the same generation of Observant activity that also involved better-known friars of the Quattrocento.

He also took part in the early pastoral use of print. Works connected with his name include catechetical and devotional texts, notably a composition known as the Tabula della salute, which set out the path of Christian salvation in a schematic, didactic form suited to preaching and to public display. In this he stands among those Observant Franciscans who used the new technology of printing to circulate moral teaching and outlines of doctrine among urban audiences in late fifteenth-century Italy. His work thus joined the older craft of the itinerant preacher to printed instruction and to institutional charity in the form of the monte di pietà.

Marco spent his last years in Vicenza, where the Observant Franciscans had a convent at San Biagio. He died there on 19 March 1496 and was buried in that church. A local and Franciscan cult grew up around his memory in the Marche and the Veneto. The Holy See later confirmed the cult, and he was beatified by Pope Gregory XVI in 1839 (confirmation of cult, 20 September 1839). He was not subsequently canonized and is venerated as a beatus. His liturgical commemoration is kept on 19 March, the date of his death. Surviving evidence for his life remains limited, as is often the case for Observant preachers of his rank, and much of the detail in later lives depends on Franciscan tradition and on the record of the charitable institutions he helped to found.
