Biography

Short Description

Blessed Margaret of England is a little-known Cistercian nun of the twelfth century, commemorated in later martyrologies and Cistercian calendars on 3 February. Reliable contemporary documentation of her life is extremely scarce, and what can be said with any must rest on the later hagiographical tradition associated with the Cistercian nunnery of La Seauve-Bénite (also called Seauve-Bénite) in the Velay, in what is now the French department of Haute-Loire, in the historic diocese of Le Puy. She is consistently described as English by origin or parentage, which accounts for the designation Margaret of England, though even the place of her birth is not securely recorded. Some later accounts claim that she was born in Hungary to English parents, a motif that appears in other English exile narratives of the high Middle Ages and cannot be independently confirmed.

According to the traditional outline of her life, Margaret embraced the Cistercian reform and entered the monastery of La Seauve-Bénite, a house of Cistercian nuns. The abbey had been founded in the twelfth century and belonged to the wider network of Cistercian women's communities that spread in France in that period. Nothing detailed survives about her offices, writings, or particular austerities; she is remembered simply as a nun of that house who lived a regular monastic life. A still more elaborate and less trustworthy strand of legend sends her on pilgrimage to Jerusalem before her entry into religion. Such Holy Land episodes are common in later medieval vitae and should be treated as unverified.

The Cistercian Order, founded at Cîteaux at the end of the eleventh century, expanded rapidly across western Europe in the twelfth century, including into England after the foundation of Waverley and other houses. Women's Cistercian communities were numerous in France. An Englishwoman entering a French Cistercian nunnery in this period is historically plausible, whether she travelled as a pilgrim, a refugee, or in some other connection now lost. Beyond that general context, however, Margaret's biography cannot be reconstructed in detail without repeating unverified legend. Historians therefore treat her principally as a name in the Cistercian liturgical calendar rather than as a figure whose career can be narrated from charters or a contemporary life.

The year of her death is given in numerous modern directories of saints and in Cistercian tradition as 1192, and her feast was kept on 3 February. She died at or in connection with La Seauve-Bénite in France. She was never the subject of a well-documented papal canonization in the later medieval or Tridentine sense; her status as Blessed reflects a local cult and subsequent listing in martyrologies and Cistercian menologies rather than a surviving bull of beatification. No securely attested patronages, widely famed relics, or contemporary vita of independent historical value are known. The poverty of the sources means that Margaret remains an obscure figure: an English Cistercian nun of the late twelfth century, associated with La Seauve-Bénite, whose memory was preserved in the liturgical tradition of her order.
