Biography

Short Description

Margaret Anne Sinclair was born on 29 March 1900 in Edinburgh, Scotland, the third of six children of Andrew Sinclair, a labourer who worked as a dustman and scaffolder, and Elizabeth Kelly. The family lived in poor conditions in the Cowgate district of Edinburgh's Old Town, a crowded neighbourhood closely tied to the city's Irish Catholic community. She was baptised at St Patrick's Church in the Cowgate, the parish church that later became the principal centre of her cult. Educated at local Catholic schools, including St Anne's, she left formal schooling in her early teens to help support the household, a common pattern in working-class Edinburgh at the turn of the twentieth century.

She worked first as an apprentice French polisher, then in a biscuit factory, and later as a machinist in a cabinet works. Alongside wage labour she took part in trade-union activity and is remembered for standing with fellow workers in industrial disputes. Her religious practice was regular rather than spectacular: she belonged to the Children of Mary, attended Mass as her hours allowed, and made a pilgrimage to the Marian shrine at Carfin in Lanarkshire. The decision to enter religious life grew out of this combination of factory work, family poverty, and parish devotion, not from a convent boarding-school upbringing.

In 1923 she entered the Colettine Poor Clare community at Notting Hill in London and received the name Sister Mary Francis of the Five Wounds. The Colettines follow a strict Franciscan rule of enclosure, poverty, and contemplative prayer. She received the habit in 1924. Shortly afterwards she contracted tuberculosis, which affected her throat and overall health. After only a brief period in the cloister she died on 24 November 1925, aged twenty-five. Contemporary notices emphasised her patience in illness and her perseverance in prayer rather than any public ministry, which enclosure would in any case have precluded.

Devotion to her developed especially in Scotland after her death. Her remains were brought from London to Edinburgh in 1927 and buried at Mount Vernon Cemetery; they were later translated to St Patrick's Church in the Cowgate, where a shrine was established. A cause for beatification was introduced in the mid-twentieth century, and on 6 February 1978 Pope Paul VI declared her Venerable, a judgment that her virtues were heroic. She has not been beatified or canonized and has no feast in the General Roman Calendar and no formally assigned patronages. Popular memory in Edinburgh has associated her with ordinary working people and with the Catholic poor of the Cowgate, presenting her short life as an example of holiness lived in factory labour and a brief contemplative vocation in the early twentieth century.
