Biography

Short Description

The given name Margaret (from Greek margaritēs, “pearl”) has been borne by many women in Christian and European history, including virgin martyrs, queens, mystics, tertiaries, and foundresses. The query supplies only that name, with no epithet, century, see, order, or linked encyclopedia identifier. Under those conditions no single historical person can be identified, and every specific biographical field must remain blank rather than be filled by conjecture.

Figures often invoked simply as “Saint Margaret” are not interchangeable. Margaret of Antioch (also called Marina) belongs to late-antique or early-medieval passion literature set in Asia Minor; her cult became widespread in the medieval Latin West. Margaret of Scotland was an eleventh-century English princess who became queen of Scots and was later canonized. Margaret of Cortona was a thirteenth-century penitent and Franciscan tertiary in Tuscany. Margaret Mary Alacoque was a seventeenth-century Visitandine nun in France associated with Sacred Heart devotion. Each has a distinct chronology, geography, marital history, and set of patronages. Queens such as Margaret of Anjou or Margaret Tudor belong to documented dynastic history and are likewise distinct from the saints of the same name.

Religious affiliations among women named Margaret have included Benedictine monasticism, the Poor Clares, Franciscan tertiary life, and the Order of the Visitation, but none of those can be assigned without knowing which Margaret is meant. No Bishop of Rome or Coptic Pope of Alexandria, and no Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Coptic, or Church of the East patriarch or catholicos, has borne this name. Feast days, burial sites, and lists of patronages therefore cannot be stated for an unspecified subject.

A careful hagiographical record therefore states only that the name is feminine and that papal and patriarchal office are excluded. Year of birth, places of birth and death, burial, spouse, children, order, feast, canonization, and beatification remain unverified until a particular Margaret is named by additional historical markers.
