Biography

Short Description

María Amparo Carbonell Muñoz was a Spanish religious sister of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (the Salesian Sisters, founded by Saint John Bosco and Saint Mary Domenica Mazzarello). She was born in 1893 in Alboraya, an agricultural town in the province of Valencia. Contemporary notices describe a modest family background and a formation that was practical rather than academic. Attracted to the Salesian spirit of simple service, she entered the Institute and made religious profession in the 1920s. She was not appointed to government or to classroom teaching; her ordinary work in the congregation was domestic, above all as cook, in various houses in Spain. Accounts from her sisters present her as cheerful, unassuming, and devoted to Mary under the title Help of Christians.

By 1936 she belonged to the Salesian community associated with Sarrià in Barcelona. When the Spanish Civil War began in July of that year, violent anticlerical persecution erupted in much of the Republican zone, including Catalonia. Many religious dispersed, went into hiding, or left their convents. Sister Amparo remained in the city together with Sister Carmen Moreno Benítez in order to care for sick members of the community who could not be moved and who were being looked after in a clinic. Their decision was an act of charity and of fidelity to religious life rather than a political gesture; they stayed because the infirm could not be abandoned.

In that climate of hostility to the Church they were seized by militiamen. They were killed in Barcelona in September 1936. Later Catholic tradition and the beatification process treated the deaths as martyrdom in odium fidei, that is, out of hatred for the faith: they were targeted as consecrated women who would not renounce their identity or their duty of care. Their bodies were recovered from a common grave. Precise details of the arrest and of the exact hour of death are those typical of wartime killings rather than of a fully documented judicial process; the year, the city, and the religious motive are the elements on which the sources agree.

Pope John Paul II beatified María Amparo Carbonell Muñoz, together with Carmen Moreno Benítez and a large group of other Spanish martyrs of the 1930s, on 11 March 2001 in Saint Peter's Square. She is venerated in the Catholic Church as Blessed and has not been canonized. Her memory is kept especially in the Salesian Family and in the churches of Valencia and Barcelona. Surviving documentation of her interior life is limited; what can be said with historical caution rests on congregational records, the circumstances of 1936, and the acts of the beatification, not on an extensive personal correspondence or a contemporary full-length biography.
