Biography
Maria Anna Sala was a nineteenth-century Italian religious sister of the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Marcellina, remembered as a teacher and for the patience with which she bore a long illness. She was born on 21 April 1829 in Brivio, in the Brianza district of Lombardy, then under Austrian rule as part of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia. She was one of eight children of Giovanni Sala and Giovanna Maironi da Ponte and was raised in a devout Catholic family. From youth she showed both piety and an aptitude for teaching. As a young woman she entered the Sisters of Saint Marcellina, a congregation founded in 1838 by the Milanese priest Luigi Biraghi for the Christian education of girls, and she made her religious profession in that institute.
For more than four decades she worked as an educator in the schools of her congregation in northern Italy. She taught in several houses, among them those at Cernusco sul Naviglio, Vimercate, and Milan, combining academic instruction with the spiritual and moral formation of her pupils. Contemporaries regarded her as a capable, patient, and unassuming teacher. She also served the congregation in internal roles, including the formation of younger sisters.
In later life she developed a tumor of the throat. She concealed the gravity of the disease for a long time so that she could continue teaching and community duties without alarming others. When the illness could no longer be hidden she accepted it with resignation. She died in Milan on 24 November 1891.
Her reputation for holiness led to the opening of a cause for beatification. Pope John Paul II beatified her on 26 October 1980. She has not been canonized. Her liturgical memorial is observed on 24 November, the anniversary of her death. She is remembered especially within the Marcelline family and among those devoted to Catholic education.
