Biography

Short Description

María Beatriz del Rosario Arroyo y Pidal, known in religion as Mother Rosario of the Visitation, was a Filipino Catholic nun in the Dominican tradition and the foundress of the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary of the Philippines. She was born on 17 February 1884 in the district of Molo in Iloilo, then part of the Spanish Philippines, the daughter of Ignacio Arroyo, a lawyer and public figure, and María Pidal. The Arroyo family belonged to the professional and landed elite of Iloilo and was known for its Catholic practice. One of her brothers, José María Arroyo, later served as a senator of the Philippines. She was baptized at Saint Anne Parish in Molo and received a Christian education first in her native town and afterward in Manila, where she encountered Dominican religious women at the historic Beaterio de Santa Catalina in Intramuros.

In 1912 she entered the Beaterio de Santa Catalina de Siena, a community of women living according to Dominican spirituality in Manila. There she was formed in contemplative prayer, community life, and apostolic work in the spirit of Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine of Siena. She made religious profession and took the name Rosario. After years in Manila she returned to the Visayas, seeking to establish Dominican sisterhood more firmly in her own region, where educational and pastoral needs were great and locally rooted congregations of sisters were still few. With ecclesiastical support she gathered companions and began a new community in Molo.

The Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary of the Philippines was founded in Molo in 1925. Its members, often called the Dominican Sisters of Molo, dedicated themselves especially to the Christian education of girls, catechesis, and works of charity among the poor. Mother Rosario served as first superior and formator, shaping the congregation around devotion to the Rosary, simplicity of life, and service to the Church in the Philippines. Under her direction the sisters opened schools and residences in Iloilo and elsewhere in the Visayas, contributing to Catholic education in the decades after the end of Spanish rule and through the mid-twentieth century. Those who knew her remembered a woman of prayer, practical judgment, and maternal care for her sisters and for the people they served.

She died in Molo, Iloilo, on 14 June 1957 and was buried at the congregation’s motherhouse there. In later years the Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary continued to grow and extended their work beyond the Philippines. A cause for her beatification was introduced in the Archdiocese of Jaro, and she was named a Servant of God. On 11 June 2019 Pope Francis authorized a decree recognizing her heroic virtues, by which the Catholic Church conferred on her the title of Venerable. She has not been beatified or canonized, and she has no universally assigned liturgical feast or official patronages. Her memory is kept chiefly in the Visayas and among the sisters, alumnae, and students of the congregation she founded.
