Biography

Short Description

Maria Bernarda Bütler was born Verena Bütler on 28 May 1848 in the village of Auw in the canton of Aargau, Switzerland, the fourth of eight children of a Catholic farming family. She was baptized the same day. Raised in a rural and devout household, she received a basic Christian education, made her First Communion, and was confirmed in the Catholic Church. From youth she felt drawn to consecrated life, though family needs on the farm delayed her entry. In 1867 she entered the convent of the Franciscan Sisters of Mary Help of Christians at Altstätten in the canton of St. Gallen, taking the religious name Maria Bernarda. She made her religious profession in 1869. In the Swiss community she served in ordinary convent duties and was later chosen as superior, gaining a reputation for practical charity, discipline, and a growing desire for missionary work beyond Europe.

In 1888, answering an invitation from the Bishop of Portoviejo, she led a small group of sisters from Switzerland to Ecuador. There she established what became the Congregation of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians, devoted to teaching, care of the sick, and pastoral work among the poor. The sisters settled especially in the coastal region around Chone, opening schools and workshops and combining Franciscan poverty with an active apostolate. The liberal revolution and anticlerical policies associated with the government of Eloy Alfaro in 1895 forced the community to leave Ecuador. Maria Bernarda then accepted an invitation to Colombia. Received by the bishop of Cartagena, the sisters began work on the Caribbean coast, including among poor and Afro-Colombian populations, and Cartagena became the enduring centre of the institute.

In Colombia she directed the expansion of schools, hospitals, and houses of formation and remained superior of the congregation for many years. Foundations were later established in other parts of Latin America and in Europe, including ties with her native Switzerland. Contemporary accounts describe her as combining Franciscan simplicity with administrative firmness and a maternal style of government. She spent her final years in Cartagena and died there on 19 May 1924.

After her death, devotion spread in Colombia and in Switzerland. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 29 October 1995 and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on 12 October 2008. Her liturgical feast is kept on 19 May. She is remembered as a Swiss foundress of a missionary Franciscan congregation and as a pioneer of female missionary work from German-speaking Switzerland in Latin America in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
