Biography

Short Description

Anna Francesca Boscardin was born on 6 October 1888 in Brendola, a rural village in the province of Vicenza in the Veneto region of northern Italy. She came from a poor peasant family. Her father, Angelo Boscardin, was given to heavy drinking and violence, and the household was marked by hardship and fear. As a child she received only rudimentary schooling and was widely regarded as slow-witted; she was mocked with the nickname "the goose." Before entering religious life she worked as a domestic servant in the household of a local priest.

In 1904 she entered the congregation of the Teachers of Saint Dorothy, Daughters of the Sacred Hearts, at Vicenza and took the religious name Maria Bertilla. Because of her limited education she was first assigned to humble work in the kitchen, laundry, and bakery. She later trained as a nurse and was sent to the sisters' hospital in Treviso, where she served in the children's ward and among patients with contagious diseases. She became known for patience, gentleness, and uncomplaining obedience rather than for intellectual or administrative gifts.

During the First World War Treviso was subjected to aerial bombardment. Sister Maria Bertilla remained with the wounded and the gravely ill instead of seeking safety, continuing to nurse soldiers and civilians under dangerous conditions. In her last years she developed a tumor. After an operation the illness returned, and she died in Treviso on 20 October 1922 at the age of thirty-four.

Devotion to her spread after her death. She was beatified by Pope Pius XII on 8 June 1952 and canonized by Pope John XXIII on 11 May 1961. The Catholic Church commemorates her on 20 October. She is commonly invoked as a patron of nurses, in keeping with her hospital ministry and her example of humble service to the sick.
