Biography
Maria Bolognesi was born on 21 October 1924 in Bosaro, a small comune in the province of Rovigo in the Veneto region of northern Italy. She was the daughter of Cesira Bolognesi; her father, Giuseppe Scarpa, did not marry her mother, and she grew up in conditions of poverty. She received only a limited education and from childhood was obliged to work, including agricultural labor and domestic service, in order to help support her household. Despite these hardships she was noted for a strong religious devotion from an early age.
From the 1940s onward she reported a series of mystical experiences that would characterize the rest of her life. These included visions of Jesus Christ and other heavenly figures, as well as prolonged periods of spiritual and physical suffering that she and her confessors understood as participation in the Passion and as attacks of a diabolical nature. She was also reputed to have received the stigmata. Throughout adulthood she endured numerous illnesses and hospitalizations, yet she continued to work when able and to assist the poor, the sick, and those in spiritual distress in her local community.
Bolognesi remained a laywoman all her life; she never entered a religious institute, never married, and had no children. Her interior life was subject to ecclesiastical examination by priests who served as her spiritual directors. After her death the Church judged that she had practiced the Christian virtues to a heroic degree. She spent her adult years principally in the Rovigo area, combining a hidden life of prayer and penance with practical charity.
She died in Rovigo on 30 January 1980 at the age of fifty-five. A diocesan inquiry into her life and virtues was opened in 1992, at which point she received the title Servant of God. Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed her Venerable on 10 May 2012 after confirming her heroic virtue. Pope Francis approved a miracle attributed to her intercession in 2013, paving the way for beatification. She was beatified on 7 September 2013 in Rovigo, with Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presiding as the papal legate. Her feast is kept on 30 January. She has not been canonized.
