Biography

Short Description

Blessed Maria Clara of the Child Jesus (Portuguese: Maria Clara do Menino Jesus) was born Libânia do Carmo Galvão Mexia de Moura Telles de Albuquerque on 15 June 1843 in Amadora, in the Lisbon region of Portugal, into a family of the Portuguese nobility. Her parents were Nuno Plácido Galvão Mexia de Moura Telles de Albuquerque and Maria da Purificação de Sá Pereira e Meneses. She was baptized in infancy and raised in a Catholic household, but her childhood was marked by early bereavement: her mother died while Libânia was still a child, and her father died not many years later, leaving her an orphan. She and her sister were thereafter cared for by relatives and received a religious education, including time as a pupil of the Sisters of Saint Dorothy in Lisbon. Those losses and that schooling shaped a piety oriented toward the poor and the sick, which later became the distinctive work of her institute.

In young adulthood she discerned a vocation to consecrated life. After an unsuccessful attempt to enter an existing congregation of Sisters of Charity, she came under the spiritual direction of the Capuchin friar Father Raimundo dos Anjos Beirão. With his support she founded, in Lisbon in 1871, the congregation that became the Franciscan Hospitaller Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (Congregação das Irmãs Hospitaleiras Franciscanas da Imaculada Conceição). She took the religious name Maria Clara of the Child Jesus. The new community combined Franciscan spirituality with hospital and charitable service: nursing the sick, sheltering orphans and the abandoned, and assisting the poor in a Portugal still marked by social inequality and limited public welfare. The sisters eventually received Franciscan identity and a rule suited to active hospitaller work rather than cloistered contemplation.

As foundress and superior general, Maria Clara governed a young and often impoverished institute through its first decades. She opened houses and works of mercy in Lisbon and elsewhere in Portugal, insisting on both evangelical poverty and professional care of the ill. Contemporary accounts describe her as austere in personal life, devoted to the Child Jesus and to the Immaculate Conception, and persistent in seeking ecclesiastical approval for her congregation despite the usual difficulties of a new foundation—scarcity of resources, the need to train sisters for nursing, and the scrutiny of diocesan authorities. Under her leadership the congregation took root as a distinct branch of Franciscan hospitaller life for women, later spreading beyond Portugal.

She died in Lisbon on 1 December 1899. Her reputation for holiness was kept alive by her sisters and by those who had been served by the congregation. The cause for her beatification was introduced in the twentieth century; she was later declared Venerable, and on 21 May 2011 she was beatified in Lisbon by Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, acting in the name of Pope Benedict XVI. She has not been canonized. The Franciscan Hospitaller Sisters of the Immaculate Conception continue their work in health care, education, and social assistance in Portugal and in other countries. Her liturgical memorial is kept on 1 December, the anniversary of her death.
