Biography

Short Description

Maria Crocifissa Curcio was born Rosa Curcio on 30 January 1877 in Ispica, in the Province of Ragusa in southeastern Sicily, then part of the Kingdom of Italy. She was the seventh of ten children of Salvatore Curcio and Concetta Franzò. The household was modest and religiously observant. She received little formal schooling, yet learned to read and write largely by her own efforts and showed an early attraction to prayer and to the needs of the poor. In adolescence she read a life of Saint Teresa of Ávila, an encounter that fixed her vocation within Carmelite spirituality. She entered the Carmelite Third Order while still young and sought to live a Teresian life of interior prayer without yet belonging to a cloistered community.

Her wish to enter a Discalced Carmelite monastery, including the community at Modica, was refused because of family opposition and doubts about her health. She therefore gathered in her Sicilian hometown a group of young women who wished to unite contemplative prayer with active charity. They devoted themselves especially to the Christian education of girls and to assistance of the needy. In the mid-1920s, with the encouragement of Carmelite friars, she moved this nucleus to Santa Marinella on the Tyrrhenian coast north of Rome. There, in 1925, she founded the congregation of the Carmelite Missionary Sisters of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and took the religious name Maria Crocifissa. The institute was meant to carry the spirit of Carmel, and in particular the little way of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, into missionary, educational, and social apostolates rather than into strictly cloistered life.

As foundress and superior she formed the first sisters in humility, Eucharistic devotion, Marian piety, and trust in divine providence. The congregation remained centered at Santa Marinella while opening further houses during her lifetime. She spent her last years there in declining health and died on 4 July 1957. She was buried at the motherhouse of her congregation in Santa Marinella.

A cause for beatification was later introduced. Pope John Paul II recognized her heroic virtue and declared her Venerable in 2002. She was beatified on 13 November 2005 under Pope Benedict XVI. Her liturgical memorial is observed on 4 July, the day of her death. She has not been canonized. The sisters of the institute she founded continue educational and missionary work in the Carmelite tradition.
