Biography

Short Description

Elisabetta Maria Satellico, known in religion as Maria Crocifissa, was born in Venice, then capital of the Republic of Venice, on 31 December 1706. She was the daughter of Pietro Satellico, a singer in the chapel choir of the Basilica of Saint Mark, and of Lucia Mander, and she was baptized the day after her birth. She grew up in a Catholic household of modest means and received part of her formation from Poor Clare nuns in Venice, among whom she first encountered the Franciscan enclosed life. From an early age she showed a marked inclination to prayer and to the Passion of Christ, which later shaped the religious name she would take.

Because a substantial dowry was customarily required for admission to the more prominent Venetian monasteries, and her family could not easily meet that demand, her vocation was delayed. In the mid-1720s she was accepted instead by the Poor Clare community at Montenovo, a small town in the Marche (later renamed Ostra Vetere) then under the Papal States. There she received the habit and the name Maria Crocifissa, made her profession according to the Rule of Saint Clare, and lived in strict enclosure, poverty, and penance. Contemporary notices and later hagiographical accounts describe her as obedient, given to austerity, and devoted to the Eucharist and to meditation on the Cross.

In time the nuns of her monastery elected her abbess. In that office she was remembered for firm yet charitable government of the community and for encouraging fidelity to the Poor Clare reform. Sisters and later promoters of her cause attributed to her mystical graces, including ecstasies and a deep identification with the sufferings of Christ; such claims belong to the traditional portrait of her holiness and were examined in the beatification process rather than being independently documented in secular sources. Her health, already strained by austerity, failed in her late thirties. She died in the monastery at Montenovo on 8 November 1745.

A local cult persisted at the Poor Clare monastery and among the faithful of the Marche. After the diocesan and Roman inquiries into her life, virtues, and a miracle attributed to her intercession, Pope John Paul II beatified her in Saint Peter's Square on 10 October 1993. She has not been canonized. The Catholic Church commemorates her on 8 November, the day of her death. Her memory remains tied to the Poor Clares of Ostra Vetere, where her remains have been kept.
