Biography

María López de Rivas Martínez, known in religion as María de Jesús, was a Spanish Discalced Carmelite nun of the Teresian reform. She was born on 18 August 1560 in Tartanedo, in the province of Guadalajara, within the Crown of Castile. Raised in a family of respectable standing, she showed from childhood a strong attraction to prayer. At sixteen she sought the enclosed life and entered the monastery of San José in Toledo, a house founded by Teresa of Ávila. She received the Discalced Carmelite habit on 12 August 1577 and took the name María de Jesús.

After profession she spent more than six decades in that community. She was noted for exact observance of the reform constitutions, humility, and patient endurance of prolonged physical ailments, which she offered in union with the Passion of Christ. Sisters who lived with her later testified to her spirit of recollection and to mystical graces, including visions and interior locutions, though she remained discreet and did not seek attention for them.

She was elected prioress of the Toledo Carmel on several occasions. In that office she worked to preserve poverty, enclosure, silence, and contemplative prayer as envisioned in the early Teresian houses. She thus belonged to the generation of nuns who consolidated the Discalced reform in Castile after Teresa of Ávila’s death in 1582, remaining in the same monastery throughout her religious life.

She died in Toledo on 13 September 1640. A reputation for holiness continued within the Order, and her cause was eventually introduced. Pope Paul VI beatified her on 14 November 1976. The Catholic Church commemorates her on 13 September, the anniversary of her death.
