Biography

Short Description

Maria De Mattias was born on 4 February 1805 in Vallecorsa, a hill town in Lazio in central Italy, then part of the Papal States. She was a daughter of Giovanni De Mattias, a notary, and Ottavia De Angelis, and grew up in a devout household of modest local standing. Formal schooling for girls in that setting was limited, yet she developed a strong interior life of prayer. The countryside around Vallecorsa was marked by poverty, illiteracy, and the violence of brigandage, conditions that later shaped her sense of apostolic urgency. Her family expected her to marry, but she became convinced that she was called to a consecrated life rather than to marriage.

Through the preaching of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, the congregation founded by Saint Gaspar del Bufalo, she encountered a spirituality centered on the Blood of Christ as the price of redemption and a call to reconciliation. Father Giovanni Merlini, a Missionary of the Precious Blood, served as her spiritual director and encouraged her to found a community of women who would combine adoration of the Precious Blood with active ministry, above all the Christian education of girls and catechesis among the poor. On 4 March 1834, in the mountain town of Acuto, she established the Congregation of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ. The new institute began in material hardship and faced local suspicion, yet it gradually took root as she opened schools and formed young women in faith and practical skills.

For more than three decades she traveled extensively through central Italy, often under difficult conditions, founding houses, teaching, and collaborating with Precious Blood missionaries in popular missions. She joined a mystical devotion to the Blood of Christ with a practical concern for the dignity of women and the evangelization of neglected rural populations. A substantial body of letters documents both her spiritual teaching and the daily burdens of governing a young religious family. Recurring illness did not end her work of expansion and formation.

She died in Rome on 20 August 1866. She was beatified by Pope Pius XII on 1 October 1950 and canonized by Pope John Paul II on 18 May 2003. Her liturgical memorial is observed on 4 February. The congregation she founded continues to work in education, healthcare, social ministry, and pastoral service in many countries, remaining attached to the charism of adoring the Blood of Christ and serving those most in need.
