Biography

María del Carmen González-Ramos García-Prieto was born on 30 June 1834 in Antequera, in the province of Málaga in Andalusia, Spain, the daughter of Francisco González Ramos and María Antonia García-Prieto. She grew up in a Catholic household in nineteenth-century southern Spain and received a Christian education. From an early age she was noted for personal piety and for a practical concern for the poor and for the instruction of girls, dispositions that later shaped both her married life and her work as a foundress.

In 1857 she married Joaquín Muñoz del Rey. The marriage was unhappy: her husband was unfaithful and the home became a place of trial, which she endured with patience and without abandoning her marital obligations. The couple had no children. After Muñoz died in 1878 she was left a widow in Antequera and devoted herself more fully to prayer, penance, and works of mercy, including teaching and assistance to the sick and the needy. She opened educational work from her own surroundings and gathered companions who shared her intention of a stable religious life in the service of children and the poor.

On 8 May 1884 she and her first companions received the Franciscan habit, and she took the religious name María Carmen of the Child Jesus. That act is treated as the foundation of the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Hearts (Hermanas Franciscanas de los Sagrados Corazones), an institute of Franciscan spirituality dedicated to the Christian education of children and young people and to service of those in need. She served as the first superior, formed the early sisters, and directed the first houses and schools from the motherhouse in Antequera as the community took shape under diocesan oversight in the later nineteenth century.

She died in Antequera on 9 November 1899. Her congregation continued after her death and obtained the ecclesiastical approvals needed for a lasting institute. A cause for her beatification was introduced in the twentieth century; she was beatified on 6 May 2007 during the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI, in a ceremony held in Antequera. Her liturgical memorial is kept on 9 November. She has not been canonized.
