Biography

Short Description

María del Carmen Viel Ferrando was born on 31 July 1901 in Sueca, a town in the province of Valencia in eastern Spain. She was raised in a Catholic family in the devout milieu of early-twentieth-century Valencian parish life. As a young woman she earned her living as a seamstress. Alongside her work she gave herself to the apostolate and became an active member of the Juventud Femenina de Acción Católica (Young Women's Catholic Action) in her parish. In that association she was known for piety, catechetical work, charity, and zeal in encouraging other young women in the practice of the faith.

The 1930s brought intense political polarization and rising anti-clerical violence in Spain. After the military rising of July 1936 and the outbreak of the Civil War, the Republican zone—which included Valencia—saw a severe persecution of the Catholic Church. Bishops, priests, religious, and numerous lay faithful were killed because of their religion. María del Carmen did not abandon her Catholic identity or her work in Catholic Action. Her public association with the Church made her a target for militias operating in the Valencia region during the first months of the war.

In the late summer of 1936 she was arrested. On 6 September 1936, at the age of thirty-five, she was taken from detention and shot near Alzira in the province of Valencia. Contemporary notices and later diocesan investigations present her as having faced death for her faith. Her martyrdom belongs to the large number of lay Catholics, especially members of Catholic Action, who were killed in the Archdiocese of Valencia between 1936 and 1939.

On 11 March 2001 Pope John Paul II beatified her in Saint Peter's Square together with 232 other martyrs of the Archdiocese of Valencia, a group commonly called the 233 Spanish Martyrs. She is therefore venerated in the Catholic Church as Blessed. Her memory is kept in the diocese of Valencia and in her native Sueca as an example of lay holiness: ordinary Christian fidelity lived in work, parish apostolate, and perseverance under persecution until martyrdom. She has not been canonized.
