Biography

Short Description

Maria Domenica Lazzeri was born on 16 March 1815 in Capriana, a village in the Val di Fiemme of the Italian-speaking Tyrol. At the time the valley formed part of the County of Tyrol in the Austrian Empire; it now lies in the province of Trentino in northern Italy. She came from a modest and devout rural family; her father was a miller. In the community she was known as Meneghina. Her childhood followed the pattern of parish-centered Alpine Catholic life in the early nineteenth century. After her father’s death while she was still young, she took on heavier domestic duties in the household.

In 1833, when she was about eighteen, she was struck by a serious lingering illness that contemporaries described in terms suggesting a wasting or pulmonary condition. Local medical care did not restore her. She lost mobility and was confined permanently to her bed in the family home, remaining there for roughly the last fourteen or fifteen years of her life. From about 1835, numerous witnesses reported stigmata on her body: wounds in the hands, feet, and side, together with marks associated with the crown of thorns. Bleeding was said to recur especially in connection with Friday remembrance of the Passion. These signs, and her patience in suffering, led people in the valley to call her l’Addolorata di Capriana, the Sorrowful Woman of Capriana.

During the years of her enclosure she was widely reported to take no ordinary food or drink, receiving only the Eucharist. Priests, physicians, and other visitors came to Capriana to observe the claimed inedia and the stigmata. Her case became known beyond the Tyrol and belongs to the cluster of nineteenth-century European stigmatics whose bodies were treated both as objects of devotion and as subjects of inquiry. She remained a laywoman in her family home, under ordinary spiritual direction; she did not enter a religious order and she never married. Her room became a place of prayer for villagers and for pilgrims who made their way to the remote valley.

Lazzeri died in Capriana on 4 April 1848, at the age of thirty-three. The year was one of political upheaval in the Austrian Empire, but locally her death was remembered as that of a woman who had offered long illness in union with the Passion. She has not been beatified or canonized, and the Holy See has not assigned her an official feast day or patronages. She is nonetheless remembered as a Servant of God, the title used when a cause of beatification has been initiated, and her memory is still attached to Capriana and to the history of modern stigmata. What can be said with confidence rests on contemporary testimony and later retellings: the extraordinary claims were widely attested in her own time, yet they have never been the subject of a completed Roman process of canonization.
