Biography

María Emilia Riquelme y Zayas was born on 5 August 1847 in Granada, in Andalusia, Spain, the daughter of Joaquín Riquelme y Gómez, a military officer, and María Emilia Zayas de la Vega. She was raised in a Catholic household of some social standing in nineteenth-century Granada. Her mother died while she was still a child, and she was thereafter brought up under her father's care. Formed in the religious culture of Restoration-era Spain, she received a Christian education and from an early age showed a marked devotion to the Eucharist and to the Virgin Mary under the title of the Immaculate Conception. A desire for consecrated life appeared in her youth, but her father refused permission for her to enter a convent. She therefore remained in the family home, combining domestic duties with a hidden life of prayer and charity toward the poor of the city.

After her father's death she was free to devote herself more openly to apostolic work in Granada. She gave particular attention to poor and uneducated girls, seeking to offer them Christian instruction and basic human formation at a time when schooling for impoverished females was scarce. She also promoted adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, in keeping with the wider nineteenth-century revival of Eucharistic devotion. Women who shared her ideals gathered around her. With the approval of the Archbishop of Granada she founded, on 25 March 1896, the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and Mary Immaculate. The new institute joined perpetual Eucharistic adoration with missionary outreach and the education of the needy, under the patronage of Mary Immaculate. Riquelme became its first superior and the principal formator of its early members.

As foundress she shaped both the contemplative and the active dimensions of the congregation: community life centered on the Eucharist, together with schools, catechesis, and care for the poor. Under her long government the sisters established houses in Spain and later carried the same charism beyond the Iberian Peninsula into missionary settings in the Americas and elsewhere. She remained based in Granada, directing the institute through the social and political upheavals that marked Spain in the early twentieth century, and was remembered by those who knew her as a woman of prayer, humility, and practical charity rather than of public prominence.

María Emilia Riquelme y Zayas died in Granada on 10 January 1940, at the age of ninety-two. A reputation for holiness attached to her memory, and a cause for beatification was introduced in the Archdiocese of Granada. After diocesan and Roman investigations, Pope Francis authorized the decree on her heroic virtues on 14 December 2015, granting her the title of Venerable. A miracle attributed to her intercession was later approved, and she was beatified on 9 November 2019 in Granada, with Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu presiding as papal legate. She is venerated in the Catholic Church as Blessed María Emilia Riquelme y Zayas. Her congregation continues its Eucharistic and educational work in various countries, and her liturgical commemoration is associated with 10 January, the date of her death.
