Biography

Short Description

Maria Gay i Tibau was a nineteenth-century Catalan Roman Catholic religious foundress, known as the originator of the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Girona (Congregació de Germanes de Sant Josep de Girona, sometimes called the Josefines de Girona). She was born on 24 October 1813 in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, a port town on the Costa Brava in the Baix Empordà of Catalonia, then part of the Kingdom of Spain. She grew up in a Catholic household of modest means in a community whose economy was tied to the sea and to small-scale trade. From youth she showed a marked piety and a concern for the sick and the poor, in a region and century marked by recurrent political conflict, including the Carlist Wars, as well as by poverty, epidemic disease, and very limited public welfare.

After the death of her parents she left her native town and settled in the city of Girona. There she devoted herself to visiting and nursing the ill in their own homes, an apostolate that was still little organized in mid-nineteenth-century Catalonia, where many of the urban poor had scant access to hospitals. Over time she gathered other women who wished to share a life of prayer and practical charity. In 1875 she established the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Girona, placing the community under the patronage of Saint Joseph. The sisters combined a simple common life with care of the sick and the dying in their homes and, as the institute developed, with the education of girls.

As first superior she guided the community’s early growth, the shaping of its way of life, and its first relations with diocesan authority. The congregation obtained local ecclesiastical recognition and began to open small houses. Maria Gay i Tibau continued a life of personal austerity and direct service until her death in Girona on 29 June 1884, at about seventy years of age.

The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Girona outlived their foundress and extended their works of healthcare and teaching in Catalonia and beyond. She has not been beatified or canonized by the Catholic Church and has no place in the universal liturgical calendar. Within her congregation and in the diocese of Girona she is remembered as a pioneer of organized home nursing and as an example of female religious initiative in nineteenth-century Spain. Many personal details of her inner life remain sparsely documented, as is common for foundresses of modest local congregations of that period.
