Biography

Short Description

Maria Ludovica De Angelis was born Antonina De Angelis on 24 October 1880 in San Gregorio, a rural locality in the province of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region of Italy, then part of the Kingdom of Italy. She was the eldest of eight children in a family of modest agricultural means. Her childhood belonged to the world of late nineteenth-century Italian peasant Catholicism: limited formal schooling, household and farm work, and the round of parish life. Abruzzo in those decades was marked by poverty and by emigration, and for a young woman of her background a religious congregation was one of the few paths that combined education, a structured spiritual life, and a recognized form of public service.

Drawn to consecrated life, she entered the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, known also as the Salesian Sisters, the congregation founded in the nineteenth century by Saint John Bosco and Saint Maria Domenica Mazzarello for the Christian education and care of the young, especially the poor. She received the religious name Maria Ludovica. After her formation and the profession of vows in Italy, her superiors assigned her to the congregation's missions in Argentina. She left her homeland in the first decade of the twentieth century and was sent to La Plata, the recently founded capital of Buenos Aires Province, where the Salesian Sisters staffed a hospital for children.

In La Plata she remained for the rest of her life, more than half a century, serving at the children's hospital associated with her congregation. She worked in successive roles that included domestic labor, nursing, the pharmacy, and administrative leadership. Those who later collected memories of her described an industrious, practical sister, attentive to the poorest patients and credited with helping to organize and enlarge the hospital's capacity. She combined long hours of work with a regular life of prayer according to the Salesian rule. In a city shaped by immigration and urban growth, she became a familiar figure to families who sought both medical care and spiritual support. She continued in this service into old age despite declining health.

The Argentina to which she was sent was a nation of large-scale European immigration, including many Italians, and of rapidly expanding cities. La Plata had been founded in 1882 as a planned provincial capital. Salesian work there corresponded to the congregation's charism of serving the young and the poor in urban settings. Sister Maria Ludovica's unusually long tenure at a single institution meant that she became part of the hospital's identity and of local Catholic memory. Accounts of her kindness, her insistence on care for children who could not pay, and favors attributed to her prayers circulated among staff, patients' families, and fellow religious.

She died in La Plata on 25 February 1962. A cause for beatification was later introduced, based on her reputation for holiness and on a miracle attributed to her intercession. Pope John Paul II beatified her on 3 October 2004 in Saint Peter's Square. She has not been canonized and is venerated as a blessed of the Catholic Church. Her liturgical memorial is observed on 25 February, the day of her death. She is remembered especially among the Salesian Sisters and in the Church of La Plata as a missionary whose adult life was spent in one hospital, caring for sick children with quiet persistence.
