Biography

Short Description

Maria Luisa of Spain was born in 1782 at the Palace of San Ildefonso, a daughter of King Charles IV of Spain and Queen Maria Luisa of Parma. As an infanta of the Spanish Bourbons she grew up in a court tightly linked by marriage to the Italian Bourbon houses of Parma and Naples. In 1795 she married her first cousin Louis, Hereditary Prince of Parma, son of Duke Ferdinand of Parma and Archduchess Maria Amalia of Austria. The couple remained for several years at the Spanish court, where she gave birth to their son Charles Louis in 1799 and their daughter Maria Luisa Carlota in 1802. Contemporary accounts portray her as lively, devout, and strongly attached to Spanish court ceremonial.

By the Treaty of Aranjuez in 1801, Napoleon Bonaparte compensated the Bourbons of Parma for the loss of their duchy by creating the Kingdom of Etruria from the former Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Louis and Maria Luisa became king and queen of this new satellite state and settled in Florence. Louis, who suffered from epilepsy and chronic ill health, died in 1803, leaving Maria Luisa as regent for their young son. Her regency was brief and precarious. In 1807 Napoleon dissolved Etruria, annexed its territory, and summoned the widowed queen to France. He offered her the prospect of a new crown in northern Portugal, a plan that collapsed with the Peninsular War. Seeking to reach her family in Spain, she was detained and later confined. From 1811 she was held under guard in a convent in Rome, separated for a time from her son, until the fall of Napoleonic power in 1814 restored her liberty.

At the Congress of Vienna she pressed for the restoration of Parma to her son. The powers instead granted Parma for life to Napoleon's Habsburg widow, Marie Louise of Austria, and compensated Maria Luisa with the small Duchy of Lucca, together with a reversionary right for her son to succeed in Parma after Marie Louise's death. Maria Luisa took possession of Lucca in 1817 as duchess in her own right. Her government there was devoutly Catholic and politically conservative. She imposed a formal court on Spanish lines, favored the clergy, and resisted the liberal and constitutional currents then stirring in Italy. Public works and religious foundations marked her years in Lucca, but her rule was often described as severe and out of sympathy with local traditions of municipal liberty.

In her final years her health failed. She left Lucca for Rome, where she died of cancer in 1824 at the age of forty-one. She was succeeded in Lucca by her son Charles Louis, who later, after the death of Marie Louise of Austria, became Duke of Parma as Charles II. Maria Luisa's remains were taken to Spain and interred at the royal monastery of El Escorial. She is remembered in dynastic history as queen of Etruria, regent during the Napoleonic crisis, and sovereign duchess of restored Lucca, a Bourbon princess whose life was shaped by the upheaval of Italy and Spain in the early nineteenth century.
