Biography

Short Description

María Luisa Montesinos Orduña was a Spanish Catholic laywoman and martyr of the religious persecution that accompanied the Spanish Civil War. She was born on 3 June 1901 in Valencia, on the Mediterranean coast of Spain, and was raised in a practicing Catholic family. She did not enter a religious institute and is not recorded as having married or had children. Her public life in the Church was that of a committed laywoman of the early twentieth century: she belonged to Marian associations of the Daughters of Mary (Hijas de María) and to Catholic Action (Acción Católica), through which she took part in parish devotion, catechesis, and the social apostolate then typical of Valencian laywomen.

After the military rising of July 1936, the Republican rearguard in the region of Valencia became the scene of intense anticlerical violence. Public worship was suppressed, churches were sacked or closed, and clergy, religious, and known practicing laity were imprisoned or killed. Valencia province produced hundreds of such deaths between 1936 and 1939. María Luisa belonged to the class of visibly committed lay Catholics whom revolutionary committees and militias treated as enemies. Surviving documentation of her last months is sparse, as is common for lay victims of that persecution, but it is established that she was seized in the winter of 1936–1937.

On 28 January 1937 she was executed by firing squad at Paterna, a municipality immediately northwest of Valencia. Paterna’s cemetery and the former riding school known as the Picadero de Paterna were principal sites of mass shootings for prisoners brought from the city. She was thirty-five years old. She is counted among the Catholics killed there out of hatred of the faith rather than as a combatant in the military conflict.

Pope John Paul II beatified her on 11 March 2001 in Saint Peter’s Square, together with 232 other martyrs almost all connected with the Archdiocese of Valencia and neighboring sees. The group is commonly called the 233 Spanish Martyrs or the Blessed Martyrs of Valencia. She has not been canonized. In the liturgical calendar used in Spain the group is commemorated on 22 September. Beyond the outline of her birth, lay apostolate, arrest, and death, an extensive contemporary personal biography has not entered the public historical record; she is known chiefly through the acts of the beatification process and the collective memory of the Valencian Church.
