Biography

Maria Maddalena Starace was born Costanza Starace on 5 September 1845 in Castellammare di Stabia, a coastal town near Naples then in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. She was the daughter of Francesco Starace and Macaria Gargiulo and was raised in a devout Catholic household amid the political upheaval that preceded Italian unification. From childhood she was drawn to prayer, penance, and care for the poor. The local Passionist presence and the strong Marian piety of the Sorrentine region shaped her early spiritual life. She received a simple education typical of girls of her background and, already as an adolescent, expressed a desire to consecrate herself entirely to God.

In 1865 she entered the monastery of the Passionist nuns in Castellammare di Stabia, seeking cloistered life. Fragile health forced her to leave after only a short time. She then became a member of the Passionist Third Order and continued a life of prayer in the world, gathering other young women who shared her ideals. With the support of the local bishop she founded, in the late 1860s, a new religious family that became the Congregation of the Compassionist Sisters Servants of Mary (Suore Compassioniste Serve di Maria). The community united contemplation of the Passion of Christ and devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows with active works: the education of girls, the care of orphans, nursing, and assistance to the poor. She took the religious name Maria Maddalena of the Passion, expressing her identification with Mary Magdalene and with the suffering of Jesus.

As foundress and superior she formed the first generations of sisters, worked on constitutions in a Passionist spirit, and sought ecclesiastical approval for the institute. The congregation took root in Campania and opened houses for schools and works of mercy. Starace was known for gentleness, patience in recurring illness, and a practical charity suited to the social needs of southern Italy after unification. She remained closely tied to Castellammare di Stabia, where the motherhouse was established, and continued to govern and encourage her sisters despite physical weakness.

She died in Castellammare di Stabia on 15 December 1921. A reputation for holiness persisted among the Compassionist Sisters and the local faithful, and her cause of beatification was later introduced. Pope John Paul II declared her Venerable on 7 July 2003, recognizing that she had practiced the Christian virtues to a heroic degree. She was beatified on 15 April 2007 in Naples, in a rite presided over by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins as representative of Pope Benedict XVI. The Catholic Church honors her as Blessed Maria Maddalena of the Passion (Costanza Starace), foundress of the Compassionist Sisters Servants of Mary. She has not been canonized.
