Biography

Short Description

Mária Margit Bogner was a Hungarian Poor Clare nun of the early twentieth century, remembered in Catholic Hungary for a short life of enclosure, prayer, and accepted illness. She was born on 15 December 1905 in Esztergom, in the Kingdom of Hungary. Raised in a practicing Catholic family, she received a Christian education and from youth showed piety and an attraction to consecrated life. After her schooling she discerned a vocation to the contemplative Franciscan life of the Poor Clares rather than to an active congregation.

In 1929 she entered the Poor Clare monastery in Óbuda, a district of Budapest. She received the religious name Mária Margit and began formation under the Rule of Saint Clare, with its emphasis on poverty, enclosure, choir, and contemplative prayer. Those who later recalled her described cheerfulness, exact observance, humility, and a marked devotion to the Eucharist and to the Blessed Virgin Mary. She made religious profession and took her place in the hidden routine of the community.

Not long after profession she developed tuberculosis, then a common and frequently fatal disease. She offered her declining strength and pain in union with Christ and remained recollected and concerned for others as her health failed. She died in the monastery on 13 May 1933, at the age of twenty-seven.

She was little known outside her community and country during her lifetime. A reputation for holiness grew after her death, and a cause for beatification was later introduced; she is regarded as a Servant of God. She has not been beatified or canonized and has no universally assigned feast day or official patronages. Her memory is kept mainly among Hungarian Catholics and Poor Clare communities as an example of youthful contemplative consecration and redemptive suffering in the interwar period.
