Biography

Short Description

Maria Domenica Mazzarello was born on 9 May 1837 in the village of Mornese in Piedmont, then part of the Kingdom of Sardinia. She was the eldest of seven children of Giuseppe Mazzarello and Maddalena Calcagno, a family of modest peasant farmers. She received only rudimentary schooling and from childhood worked in the fields and vineyards. Raised in a devout household, she developed a strong eucharistic and Marian piety and as a young woman joined the Pious Union of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate, a local association of girls and young women who combined prayer with charitable work under the direction of the parish priest Father Domenico Pestarino.

In 1860 a typhoid epidemic struck the district. Mazzarello nursed sick relatives and neighbors and herself contracted the disease, which left her with permanently weakened health and made heavy farm labor impossible. With her friend Petronilla Mazzarello she then opened a small dressmaking workshop, both to earn a living and to gather local girls for instruction in sewing, literacy, and Christian life. The workshop became an informal oratory and school for the young women of Mornese.

A turning point came in 1864 when Saint John Bosco visited Mornese at Pestarino’s invitation. Don Bosco recognized in Mazzarello and her companions the nucleus of a female congregation that would apply his Preventive System to the education of girls. After years of preparation, the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice) was canonically erected on 5 August 1872 in Mornese, with Mazzarello as first superior general. She made religious profession and governed the rapidly growing community with practical sense, cheerfulness, and maternal firmness. The sisters opened schools, oratories, and workshops; in 1877 the first missionary group left for Uruguay and Argentina.

Mazzarello continued to visit the new houses, form novices, and work in close collaboration with Don Bosco until her health failed. Recurrent illness, including pleurisy, undermined her strength. In 1881 she went to the house at Nizza Monferrato, where her condition worsened. She died there on 14 May 1881 at the age of forty-four. Pope Pius XI beatified her on 20 November 1938; Pope Pius XII canonized her on 24 June 1951. She is venerated as co-foundress of the Salesian Sisters, whose educational and missionary work continues worldwide.
