Biography

Short Description

Maria Luise Merkert was born on 21 September 1817 in Neisse (now Nysa, in present-day Poland), then a town in Prussian Silesia in the Kingdom of Prussia. She was the daughter of the merchant Anton Merkert, who died while she was still an infant, and Maria Barbara Pfitzner, who raised Maria and her older sister Mathilde in a devout Catholic home. The early death of her father and the later death of her mother in 1842 left the sisters without close family support and helped to turn their attention toward the sick and the poor of their town. Both sisters belonged to the Third Order of Saint Francis and sought a way of life that would join prayer with practical charity, taking as a model Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, whose care for the afflicted was already well known in Silesian piety.

In 1842 Maria and Mathilde Merkert, together with their companions Clara Wolff and Franziska Werner, began to nurse the sick poor in their own homes in Neisse, without institutional backing and often at the risk of contagion. The small circle of women gradually took on a more regular common life, adopted a simple grey habit, and became known for uncloistered nursing at a time when such active congregations of women were still relatively new in the region. Mathilde Merkert died in 1846 of typhus contracted while caring for the ill, and Clara Wolff died in 1853; Maria Merkert emerged as the principal organizer of the community. Local clergy and civic authorities regarded the unenclosed nursing sisters with a mixture of gratitude and caution, and ecclesiastical recognition came only after years of informal service.

On 4 September 1859 Heinrich Förster, Prince-Bishop of Breslau, approved the statutes of the community, which took the name Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Elizabeth. Maria Merkert was chosen as the first superior general and directed the congregation from the motherhouse in Neisse, opening further houses in Silesia and neighboring territories and insisting that professional care of the sick be joined to poverty, prayer, and community life. Under her leadership the congregation grew despite the political strains of the 1860s and the first measures of the Kulturkampf. She remained superior general until her death. Papal approval of the constitutions was granted only after her death, by Pope Leo XIII in 1887.

Maria Merkert died in Neisse on 14 November 1872. Her reputation for holiness endured among the sisters and among the people they served. Pope John Paul II declared her Venerable in 2004 after the recognition of her heroic virtues. Pope Benedict XVI authorized her beatification, which was celebrated on 30 September 2007 in Nysa by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, acting as papal legate. She is commemorated on 14 November. She has not been canonized. The Sisters of Saint Elizabeth continue their work in nursing, education, and social care in a number of countries and regard Merkert as foundress and as a model of humble service to the sick and the poor.
