Biography

Short Description

María Micaela Desmaisières y López de Dicastillo was born in Madrid in 1809 to a family of the Spanish high nobility. Her father, Miguel Desmaisières y Flores, held the title of viscount of Ramblés and served as a military officer; her mother was Bernarda López de Dicastillo y Olmeda. She lost her mother while still a child and grew up in a devout Catholic environment typical of aristocratic Spain in the early nineteenth century. As a young woman she lived partly in the world of the court and of diplomacy, accompanying her brother, who served in Spanish diplomatic posts, and she became known as the viscountess of Jorbalán. She remained unmarried and had no children, eventually embracing a life of consecrated service rather than the marriage expected of a woman of her rank.

In the 1840s, while living in Madrid, she began systematic visits to hospitals and to neighborhoods where poverty and prostitution were concentrated. Confronted with the lack of institutions that would receive women seeking to leave prostitution, she used her own resources to open a house of refuge. The work combined material assistance, education, and religious instruction, and it drew both support and controversy in a society that often treated such women as beyond rehabilitation. Her spirituality was marked by devotion to the Blessed Sacrament; she understood adoration of the Eucharist and service to the marginalized as a single vocation rather than as separate paths.

On this basis she founded, in 1856, the Congregation of Sisters Adorers, Handmaids of Charity and of the Blessed Sacrament (Congregación de Adoratrices Esclavas del Santísimo Sacramento y de la Caridad). The new institute was intended for women who would live in community, practice Eucharistic adoration, and staff houses of mercy for girls and women in moral and social danger. María Micaela served as the first superior general, formed the first sisters, and established houses in Madrid and other Spanish cities. The congregation received diocesan and later pontifical recognition and, after her death, spread to other countries.

In 1865 a cholera epidemic struck Valencia, where a community of her sisters was working. She went to Valencia to care for the sick and to sustain her religious. She herself contracted cholera and died there on 24 August 1865. Her remains were later associated with the motherhouse of her congregation in Madrid. She was beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1925 and canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1934. The Catholic Church keeps her feast on 24 August. She is remembered as a nineteenth-century Spanish foundress who joined an aristocratic background, Eucharistic piety, and practical charity toward women excluded from respectable society.
