Biography

Short Description

María Pilar de San Francisco de Borja was a Spanish Discalced Carmelite nun and martyr of the Spanish Civil War, born Jacoba Martínez García on 30 December 1877 in Tarazona, in the province of Zaragoza. In early adulthood she entered the enclosed monastery of the Discalced Carmelites of San José in Guadalajara. There she received the Carmelite habit and made religious profession under the name María Pilar of Saint Francis Borgia, living thereafter according to the Teresian constitutions in prayer, enclosure, and the common life. She remained in that community for several decades through the early twentieth century and was the senior of the three nuns later killed with her.

In July 1936 the Spanish Civil War began. Guadalajara lay in the Republican zone, where militias and popular committees carried out widespread attacks on the Catholic Church, emptying convents and killing clergy and religious. The Carmel of Guadalajara was abandoned and the nuns sought shelter in private houses in the city. On 24 July 1936 Sister María Pilar was detained together with two younger members of the same community, Sister Teresa of the Child Jesus and of Saint John of the Cross (Eusebia García y García) and Sister María Ángeles of Saint Joseph (Marciana Valtierra Tordesillas). Militiamen took the three women to an isolated place on the outskirts of Guadalajara and shot them.

María Pilar, then fifty-eight years of age, did not die at once. Accounts gathered for the beatification process report that she invoked Christ the King and expressed pardon for her attackers before dying of her wounds. The deaths of the three Carmelites belong to the larger persecution of Catholics in Spain in 1936–1939, in which thousands of bishops, priests, religious, and lay faithful were killed. Their cause was among the earlier Civil War martyrdoms to be examined by the Holy See.

Pope John Paul II beatified María Pilar de San Francisco de Borja and her two companions on 29 March 1987 in Rome, recognizing them as martyrs who died in odium fidei. They have not been canonized. Their liturgical memorial is kept on 24 July, the anniversary of their death. They are commemorated especially in the Discalced Carmelite Order and in the diocese of Guadalajara as witnesses to contemplative fidelity under violent persecution.
