Biography

Short Description

Maria Refugia od św. Anioła is known by a religious name of the type long used by women in consecrated life in Polish Catholicism. The combination of a personal name with a titular dedication (here “of Saint Angel”) indicates that she belonged to a Roman Catholic religious institute, most probably in Poland or among Polish-speaking communities. Names of this form were customarily taken at profession and thereafter used in community records, correspondence, and liturgical commemoration.

No year of birth, place of origin, year of death, or place of death can be verified from widely available historical, encyclopedic, or hagiographical sources. She does not appear in standard martyrologies or in the lists of canonized saints and beatified servants of God maintained by the Holy See. Consequently no feast day, patronage, or official cult can be assigned to her on the basis of published evidence.

Women who assumed such names ordinarily lived under a rule requiring celibacy, common life, and either contemplative prayer or active works such as education or care of the sick. In the Polish lands this form of religious life continued through the partitions, the world wars, and the communist period, often under material hardship. Individual biographies of sisters were frequently confined to unpublished convent chronicles rather than printed vitae.

Because no detailed public vita has been located, Maria Refugia od św. Anioła must be regarded as one of the many consecrated women whose memory was preserved mainly within her own congregation. Fuller biographical data would require access to diocesan or congregational archives that have not entered the general scholarly record.
